That The Last Galactus Story was never finished is one of the biggest regrets of any Galactus fan – for those unfamiliar, it would have been like the Dark Knight Returns for the Big G, but the anthology magazine Epic, in which the first nine chapters were printed, was canceled before the final chapter was printed, and it has remained in limbo ever since. A shame, as Byrne’s treatment of Galactus remains the most influential since his initial creation, and remains the best incarnation of the character.

While Byrne never put the conclusion to paper, he did give a general outline of how the tale ended, as well as a quick sketch of the story’s climax (See Page 4 of the pdf). It was that sketch as much as anything that got me started.

I was thinking about some of those old, unfinished Edgar Rice Burroughs Tarzan manuscripts that later authors picked up and finished based on his notes and thought I’d take a similar swing at finally finishing one of the greatest unfinished Galactus stories from way back in the pre-Disney Marvel days.

The approach I took was sort of like a producer trying to piece together the conclusion to a movie with stock footage when movie’s star dies before production finishes – finishing the Last Galactus Story using Byrne’s own art. I wanted to make it an entirely John Byrne production, although I was forced to fudge a little with a bit of Ron Lim and John Buscema, as well as a small bit of original art, modeled as best I could on Byrne’s pencil style.

Of course, I still had to provide the narrative, based on Byrne’s general outline, with a couple of liberties taken that still allow the story’s insertion into modern continuity – something that Byrne seemed to think was impossible – rather puzzlingly so, since my alterations to his own described conclusion are extremely subtle (and might not even be noticed, even from those already familiar with his synopsis), and his original take doesn’t necessarily violate any continuity. It might just be sour grapes on Byrne’s part, and frankly I think he should have done it for the fans himself once he realized the project was dead. Just sketched it up and posted it for free – sometimes it’s about more than just getting paid.

For my part, I felt I owed it to the Big G himself – one last nod to the Purple Planet Eater.

I should have mentioned that the link to the John Byrne site has scans of the entire first nine chapters posted - you have to go through the entire thread - but I think there all there. So if anyone is unfamiliar with 'the story so far' this should catch you up.
