Despite writing and editing nearly every book worth mentioning at DC and Marvel Len Wein was never seemingly as visible as contemporaries Gerry Conway or Cary Bates were, perhaps it was the relatively short runs he worked on, or perhaps like so many of that generation he simply did his job and sought no recognition for doing it.
For me his name is linked to The Incredible Hulk and Batman, that run of work was closer to my own era, and therefore what I remember his name best by. But consideration and respect also has to be given for his role as the Editor and his is a demonstration that shows how the best editors sought the best talent and worked to nurture that talent.
His was another era, and as I say he was never as visible a creator as the Gerry Conway's, the Roy Thomas', the Cary Bates', or even the newer wave that included Marv Wolfman, Keith Giffen, and Paul Levitz, and yet, what a legacy he leaves!
I shall remember him, by his work on the (to me) definitive era of Batman as much as anything else.
Godspeed Mr Len Wein.
