I'm an Avengers fan from way back starting with Thomas and Buscema / Palmer. Loved Englehart's, Stern's and Busiek's runs. Adored John Buscema and Perez's art. I'm currently buying Illuminati, EMH, New, Mighty, and the Initiative.
I don't like Lenil Yu's style (but admit it fits the story, the atmosphere and the current New Avengers team.)
I'm not a Bendis fan (though from interviews etc he and I evidently share some common favourit moments and issues in Marvel History.)
And I certainly don't regard the current team as Avengers. Defenders perhaps but not Avengers. Why would Wolvie continue to hanh out with this group? Why has Luke become such a fervent Avenger - he wasn't that fussed on joining? If Dr Strange and Iron Fist were to start associating with these others why would they become "Avengers".
Re the Initiative: Nice art, nice story - good to see Justice developing but Yellowjacket wasn't the Hank Pym we know and when did War Machine develop this commanding leader personality? While it was good I kept thinking two things:
1. This doesn't feel like a Marvel comic - It could be in the Ultraverse or any one of many indy publishers.
2. It was so reminiscent of New X-Men or countless other academy style scenarios.
And yet...And yet regardless of which string of the Avengers franchise we talk about I can't wait for each issue. I want to know what happens next. I want to know why, when who etc.
So why am I enjoying The Avengers? I don't know...but I am!
