I assume this issue takes place between the two Secret Wars as it ends with the Beyonder's arrival on Earth in time for Secret Wars II and includes characters reacting for the first time to the Beyonder taking a physical form which we also saw in Secret Wars II. However, IIRC, didn't he try on a few different looks before settling on the one he uses here and throughout the remainder of SWII? Doesn't that mean that he gave himself physical form, used it for a while, tried on a few different looks and eventually came back to the one he started with? Looks like someone didn't do their research...

Also, can anyone tell me why Iron Man was absent from this issue? It comes up but nothing beyond "we can't get in touch with him" is ever established? What was Tony Stark busy with circa 1985? Was this his big binge?

IIRC this was just prior to his return to the WCA in the red and silver armor. I would imagine he's out of touch because he is either finishing kicking the habit or getting ramped up for a comeback.

yikes?

Yeah, and Tony had to prep, from the sidelines, to seemingly handle The Beyonder's 4th (or make that 3rd since he got a handbook entry) rate villain lackey. So, Tony was fully aware of The Beyonder's threat.

From invincibleironman.com:
IRON MAN #197: (Aug., 1985) "Call Him...Thundersword!" Cover art: John Byrne. Script: Denny O'Neil. Art: Rich Buckler/Akin & Garvey. A Secret Wars II cross-over! Some lame villain with the title's handle gives IM a hard time -- so Tony and Morley lend a hand!! Elsewhere, Bethany Cabe is attacked by mysterious goons!

For some reason, my first read-through of this issue gave me the impression that all of Secret Wars II was retconned into being part of the Beyonder's bizarre little sim-game on Ceres. Which would have been incredibly messed up.

The mere fact that this issue was capable of confusing me and making me scream WTF!? over and over, is also messed up. Whatever Bendis was smoking, I don't think he got a good batch this time around.
