I'm guessing that the Stan Lee backup story was not in continuity. But has it ever been stated whether the first backup is in continuity?

The first backup is officially in continuity until someone writes a story that controdicts it... just like all other comics.

Is it a reprint of Avengers #1 with backup stories like the old classic Xmen? Is it in any way remastered or is that just a joke? How long is the series scoped to last?

Yep, it's like Classic X-Men, reprinting the original Avengers issues, with new back-up stories by Dwayne McDuffie & Michael Avon Oeming. Unlike Classic X-Men, they don't add new material within the reprints.

I thought the first issue was great. Amazingly, it was actually the first time I ever read Avengers #1 in its entirety. The back-up had some gorgeous painted artwork by Oeming. And the cover by Art Adams was very cool, had practically every Avenger ever on it.

Follow the link below for info on the first issue at Marvel's website.

Avengers Classic is *supposed* to be an ongoing. In practice, that means it'll run as long as sales are good. Hopefully it'll be around for at least a couple of years. Cross your fingers!

I want this to last until the gap between Marvel Masterworks 2 and Essential Avengers 2 is filled. That must be about four issues, featuring an early Avengers appearance of Kang - its not worth buyinh Essential Avengers 1 for these four issues, but as far as I know they have never been reprinted.
