Ok - so Dman was inducted in Cap's series. Look at Stingray and Machine Man - not inducted at all. Those guys aren't favourites of mine, but Dman is. Here's why:

Dman is a nice guy. He's not that bright but he's got the heart of an Avenger. He was moved and humble enough to be surprised to be asked. He's astonished Cap gave him his time - why did Cap do that? He saw something in Dman.

I like how the Nomad/Dman dynamic worked. The bully making fun of the most vulnerable member of the crew, but all the time the bully's girlfriend was falling for the good guy.

I didn't like the whole underground bit, but it was better than Dman being dead. I like how Bendis has explained that away and I hope we'll soon see Dman back above ground and (if not in the Avengers) at least around some times.

Way I heard it the writer on Captain America at the time, who was not the Avengers scribe, inducted D Man into team in over ib Cap's book. Is that accurate?

How does that happen?

the avengers were broken up, Cap was going to be putting together a team and he asked D man to join. D man, never offically did anything in the avengers book, or as an avengers. He plummetted to the ice right away, which I think Mark Gruenwald, the writer totally intended to do with him from the get go. I don't think he was ever thinking that the membership would cause fan boy issues years later. He was just trying to up the stakes for the "death" of a hero.

Wasn't Gruenwald the editor on Avengers at the time?

This was during the period in Simonson's run where the Avengers had been disbanded (following the incident of Kang Nebula and Dr Druid taking over the team), and Cap was trying to put together a new team of Avengers. So, when Cap inducted D-Man into the team, there technically *wasn't* a team yet in the AVENGERS book--and D-Man was "killed off" in the same issue that he was recruited.

Basically, it was an attempt to show Cap recruiting someone he knew and trusted, who would be a logical choice for him to approach when he was putting together a new Avengers team from scratch--but to not have it impact the main AVENGERS book, since D-Man was immediately taken out of the picture.

Frankly, it makes more sense, imo, than when they had Machine Man added to the team in WCA without Machine Man being present in the issue, and without even being *invited* to join the team--he was simply voted in without his knowledge or consent (by ONE member), and that was enough to officially make him a reservist.
Or how about the time that Sandman was unveiled as the newest Avengers recruit... despite having not made ANY appearances in the title or with the team to lead up to that. It was simply, hello, this is Sandman. He's a good guy now, so he's gonna join. Where the heck did *that* come from?!?
