Y'know, it's sad that a lot of the most popular Marvel super-hero women (somehow saying "super-heroine" sounds like saying "police officerette" to me) are all female versions of male heroes (on some way).

Wasp = Ant-Man
She-Hulk = Hulk
Ms. Marvel = Captain Marvel (she couldn't even keep her military rank!)
Photon = Captain Marvel (she'll always be known as "the woman Captain Marvel")

Sure, Scarlet Witch and Tigra are original with no male counterparts, but look how great they've turned out recently.

Tops in my book are:

The Scarlet Witch
I very very slowly grew to like The Scarlet Witch. It took a long time for her to become one of my all-time favorite Marvel heriones. For me I think it really started with Steve Englehart....hmmm...around issue 128 (Volume I). By the time Jim Shooter and Perez finished "The Bride of Ultron" she had fully deveoped into one of the most interesting Marvel characters.

The Wasp
I always looked at her as one of THE Avengers...maybe due to her founder status, but she was just kind of ...there. Never did much for me. Oddly enough it was during Jim Shooter's disastrous second run (when he essentially demolished Henry Pym and Tigra) that I found her intersting and started to develop a deep fondness for the character. By the time Roger Stern left she was a favorite. In fact, she was one of the only Avengers I think Stern "got right". Geoff JOhns did good by her and as unhappy as I am with Bendis I think he does a pretty good Wasp also.

She-Hulk
Hated it when she joined. Couldn't stand Stern's version. John Byrne changed everything. Unfortunatley he seems to have been the only one to have gotten her right as an Avenger. Well...Kurt Busiek did a good job but he under-utilized her. I thought he had gold when he brought her back on to the team. Should have kept her there consistently...he had an interesting unplumbed dynamic going with Jen, Ms. Marvel and Triathlon.

Speaking of Carol, Ms. Marvel is a very solid Avenger. She should be a mainstay in my book. She has the potential to be iconic I think..but she still has not made my list of Favorites...interesting but not a one of my favorites.

The Black Widow is one of my favortie characters but just not as an Avenger. That's not to say I don't think she shouldn't be an Avenger - she most definitley should be. It's just that despite her long history with the team no one has ever done anything remotley interesting with her AS AN AVENGER. When she is on the team she is just...there. She has never contributed anything. Also I think Kurt Busiek did the character a tremendous diservice when he revealed that she could not hold the team together after Onslaught. I'll be follwoing what Bendis does with her very closely.

In this same vein, another missed opportunity is Tigra. Marvel Chillers Tigra is one of my all-time favorite characters but bears no resemblance to any Tigra who has ever been an Avenger. A shame really...she could be a fantastic addition to the team.

Okay, back to Favorites:

Moondragon
Steve Englehart's Moondragon was a strong, complex and fascinating character who I thought made a great addition to the team. A little before her time...kind of the Emma Frost of her day but before the general readership realized "bad girls" could be cool. Mark Gruenwald did to Moondragon what Jim Shooter did to Henry Pym. And nothing has ever been the same for her since. Peter David's Moondragon could have made an interesting Avenger but alas...

Mantis
Englehart's Mantis was one of the most enigmatic and interesting Avengers ever. She remains a fave...unfortunately she seems to have been a one-shot. It's almost inconceivable to picture the charatcer as an Avenger now. Not sure she should be either...though I am enjoying her immensely in Starlord.

Crystal
Crystal made a fantastic addition to the team and because of her many and varied connections to the rest of the MU was a potent story-engine. My preference was to have had her on the team with her husband, a sane Quicksilver. But with or without him I thought she made valuable contributions to the book.

Non-Avenger women who could and should be Avengers include:

Dazzler! Yep, she should have joined the Avengers instead of the X-Men and stayed far far away from the clutches of C.C.

Storm! It's high time Storm leave the X-verse and take her place among earth's mightest heroes. I think Storm is a much better fit on the Avengers than Wolverine.

Lady Lark! The Squadorn Supreme member should migrate from her universe (ala the pre-crisis Black Canary) and join the awesome assemblers. I just think this woman with sonic powers and majestic wings would make a great Avenger.

Century: Your Alien Hero

No, not really, but that title should at least have outraged someone, somewhere.

> Who are your favourite female avengers?

For some reason, all the ones I'd have considered "favourites" get crapped on horribly.

- Crystal's been turned into a cartoonishly-promiscuous joke
- Julia Carpenter lost her powers and her codename, and when she got her powers back, she got thrashed by Ms Marvel, sent to prison and then to Omega Flight
- Even before any of you ever heard of Bendis, the Scarlet Witch had been Ruined Forever by literally reversing all prior characterisation to turn her into a T&A character for the hairy-palmed brigade, so much so that it's pretty much all she is now.
- I even liked Masque, who got all the hints at her identity ignored, so she could be 'revealed' as a clone and casually killed.

Meanwhile, the books focus on the ones I actively dislike. Yay.

Who's left that I actually like as a character? There's Black Widow, I guess, and Sersi when she's not crazygonuts. Firestar and She-Hulk are characters I've always preferred in other books to how they've been used/written/handled in the Avengers.

> Also what other women do you think would be good in the team. Thanks

For the New Avengers team that are the remnants of Cap's 'Secret Avengers', Diamondback really should have been there. Or the Julia Carpenter Spider-Woman, had she not been sent to Omega Flight.

For The Tony's team, I'm utterly blanking on who else to add. Especially as the lineup was already packed with women that seem to have been handpicked so Cho could draw massive T&A.

As a bonafide superheroine junkie, this is my kind of thread.

My favorite female Avengers:

MOONDRAGON - I love the haughty, arrogant Moondragon who is only trying to be the best hero she can be. The one that was in The New Defenders. And the one that's been around recently in Annihilation. Let's hope she's still around to have that chance.

MANTIS - Complex, multi-dimensional, it seemed she was written for a single purpose, and no one other than Mr. Englehart seemed to know what to do with her (or want to) but I'd love to see her active again. Once more, thank God for Annihilation.

FIREBIRD - What a fascinating character, and she's barely been explored at all. She definitely wouldn't fit in to either of the current teams, but I would love to see her featured more.

JOCASTA - The problem with Jocasta, one of my favorite Avengers, is that since she's an artificial life form, writers like to destroy her and rebuild her. I loved the original Jocasta, the one with Janet's personality, but shy and innocent. She was visually fantastic and powerful. Again, like all of these women, I would hate for Bendis to get his hands on them, but would love to see them active again.

SCARLET WITCH - Once my favorite Avenger, she has been damaged almost beyond repair. As I've said before, my favorite period for Wanda was that young, hot-headed mutant with the you and me (that's Vision) against the world attitude. I never had a problem with her ability to alter probabilities enchanced with a touch of true magic, and I don't see why writers needed to go and ruin her.

PHOTON - Powerful, commanding, competent... no wonder they had to get rid of her! Roger Stern created a mgnificent hero and really knew how to use her. It's a crime she doesn't show up somewhere.

INVISIBLE WOMAN - Okay, so Simonson's run was a bit of a bust, and maybe it doesn't really work to have Sue as an Avenger, but I would love to see her take a serious run in the Avengers and see her work with a different group of heroes that is not her family. She's my all-time favorite Marvel character, so I just can't get enough of her.

As for favorite heroines I would like to see as Avengers? Well, again, this is with the caveat that Bendis can't get anywhere near them.

VALKYRIE
DIAMONDBACK
CLEA
MEDUSA
SHADOWCAT

> Who are your favourite female avengers?

All time faves are
1. Wasp
2. She-Hulk
3. Tigra
4. Scarlet Witch

I also like

Photon/Pulsar - have a great fondness for the character and hope she comes back to the Avengers sometime

Sersi - interesting character - too often maligned. Liked Neil Gaiman's new interpretation as well.

Spiderwoman - (Drew) - always liked her since her solo series

Moondragon - esp. during her New Defenders run - lots of tragedy

Absolutely adore Hellcat (though I prefer her on a Defenders team)

Jocasta and Mantis - great characters too.

Sometimes like Ms. Marvel (too right wing at times) and the Black Widow (more in her Champions era costume)

> Also what other women do you think would be good in the team. Thanks

Valkyrie - always thought she's make a great Thor substitute.

Dazzler - the celebrity mutant would work

Storm - more likely candidate than Wolverine - moreso now that she's queen of Wakanda

Polaris - Wanda's sister - would love to see the familial relationship explored more.
