Kind of a neat article examining who should incur the cost to rebuild Midtown Manhattan in the wake of the battle with the Chitauri. For your consideration: http://lawandthemultiverse.com/2012/05/11/the-avengers-whos-gonna-pay-for-that/

It was mentioned a bit in Damage Control. May be they got the same thing in the filmverse.

They seemed to often knock them into buildings or grand central station. To me plenty of people died because of whichever direction the Avengers pushed the Shitauri. I'd be pretty pissed if you got my family killed trying to save someone else who was in their way...but I'm known to be petty. ![]()

I can understand being upset if Thor accidentally set an invader into a building and said invader crashed into one's loved one. But given the circumstances I think it was unavoidable. You have about five six people going up against hundreds or more. Said invaders were chaotic enough they were everywhere. The sad things is that this is a war and the Avengers had other concerns at the moment. They tried containing the the invasion and recusing civilians as best they could, but in a chaotic battle like that with a high civilian population such deaths are almost unavoidable. If you were to substitute the Avengers with regular soldiers then you have stray bullets to worry about.
