As a kid collecting comics this was something I never quite understood.

Mantis was thought to be dead for years up until the Crossing I believe.

Which death was the one that made everyone think she was dead dead and not oh I can come back later dead?

Was it the one where she was killed in an explosion by the Elders of the Universe when they were fighting Silver Surfer or was it in the battle the Fantastic Four had with Kang? I can't remember which one was supposed to be her real "death". I seem to remember Silver Surfer grieving for her after the Elders caused death but I remember her coming back from that one and I don't remember anyone remotely caring about her when she died in the Fantastic Four story with Kang.

I seem to remember seeing her alive again after both deaths pre-crossing even though she was always referred to as dead in the comics.

Mantis died? Didn´t knew it. Thought in the crossing Mantis was a Space Phantom, then she (the real Mantis) was with her son in the celestial quest, kissing the Vision and isn´t she with the guardians of the galaxy now?

After Silver Surfer, she was in the West Coast Avengers story around the Evolutionary War. This is where she got her true body back.

Then she left her body to join the Cotati in Fantastic Four.

I don't recall a subsequent appearance pre-Crossing. She was in the Galactus miniseries, but that was well after Crossing.

Nah, the only person who thought she was dead was the Silver Surfer, and he's a bad judge of these things. The Avengers learned fairly quickly she was a body hopper.

Yeah she got caught in an explosion and Surfer thought her dead. She actually gained some invulnerability powers after giving birth to her son Sequoia. She wound up in space to begin with to mate with the Cotati. So she was never really dead. She appears in the West Coast Avengers for a bit. Now the Mantis from "The Crossing" turns out not to be Mantis at all but a Space Phantom, which we did not find out til Avengers Forever.

Ah, Avengers Forever and The Crossing. One's a wretched, convoluted history-breaking debacle, that came out of the time period that was the nadir of the franchise, and has had terrible effects on too many characters, and the other's The Crossing.

Anyways, in Guardians of the Galaxy, Mantis encountered Kang, and they acknowledged the "history" between them, coming across as an ex-lover she was still on good terms with. It's the closest thing we've gotten so far to anyone making the effort to overturn all that Space Phantom balls.

As for Celestial Quest, in those History of the Avengers backups, Vision goes out of his way to deny anything ever happened between him and Mantis. Either he's lying, or that part of the story's been quietly thrown out (and if so, I endorse and support that).

In fairness, Vision's only specifically denying the accusation made that he had something to do with Mantis during the Celestial Madonna years. Which is accurate.

I believe the appearance I am referring to was a back up story in Fantastic Four annual 25...I remember she has a fight with Moondragon.

She did appear in FF after her WCA appearance. I don't recall all the details of the FF appearance but I know that Kang and the Silver Surfer were involved.

However, for years I hope to see Mantis back with the Avengers! In the past often Avengers came back, you know: Once an Avenger ... Under Bendis, there are only new Avengers every day. By the way, I liked Mantis best without her cosmic powers and with her human pink skin!
