Avengers Assemble #5

Provocative cover.

No clear connection to mainstream MU still. This is very important to me still and thus very annoying still.

No clear explanation given how Star-lord is apparently back from the dead. Giving them some leeway on this (and revealing if there is connection to Cosmo and Knowwhere still) but soon this will become similarly annoying.

REALLY enjoyable art still.

Exciting opening action despite the 'in media res' story crutch.

Rocket Raccoon is using a rocket jetpack!

LOVE the translation f/x. Using the Badoon is another plus.

Need some getting use to Drax heavy into weaponry. He needs to give up on hanging those blades on his butt 'cuz that would come back and bite in the... well...

Fun GoG team banter.

As impractible as a cloak may be argued for someone like Gamora, still really like the look and mystique of it for her.

Powerful double splash page.

Gratuitous double splash page. (When are the Avengers showing up already!)

Yeah, yeah, "It's war." Still, don't want every member of GoG to be cold blooded killers to a defeated enemy. Quill and Rocket doing the same thing toying with the unnarmed Badoon was disturbing. Plus, three pages of the same gunpoint questioning went on for a bit.

Noting that Thanos is Gamora's father is fine detail to his 'step'father status but for newer readers it probably should get clarified in this arc.

While the GoG got some good characterization there is only 2/3 of the book left TO SHARE for The Avengers themselves.

Nice group shot. Cute raccoon observation. Hulk/Drax greeting \:\) . Thor hitting on Gamora - ha! Clint's noticing Tasha's pain.

Infinity Gems acknowledged though the check may change to an ex on a dime once details are said.

The kiss. http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m70nb6K9wy1qfuf4mo1_1280.png As messed up as Hawkeye is becoming (and blatant a movie ripoff it must be?) it read it was still a genuine moment under insane stress of battle. (Unless Widow was just messing him up more for fun.) Nice to see Jarvis cameo but odd that he wouldn't be based in The Mansion.

Thanos' motive to thi epic grab for something he cannot have seems a little underwhelming and sloppy too. Barely any followup on Zodiac and SHIELD didn't help. Dull Avengers team banter.

In-story update of Earth's official interplanetary status. It would be even better with more detail! Not just a passing comment about some ambiguous galactic council, nor any contact with SWORD yet. Work on that!

Hawkeye delivering virtually the exact same joke that Bug did early was repetitive.

Hulk saying, "'KAY" is out of character. Cap choosing him over Tasha was... troubling. First of all 'torture for info' is something Psycho Cyclops or QUill might do. If time wasn't a factor hopefully he knows Tasha was just as qualified at extreme interrogation. And since when would the Top Cop have to resort to that here?! Director or Steve Rogers doesn't have clearance or friends in high places for intel needed when the Earth is in imminent danger?! Wrong.

Still, as evil methods go, a pretending Hulk is easy for kids to have fun with.

Inconsistent handling of Avengers aircraft inventory and functionality. (Although the one design here looked similar to the last on in Xmen Legacy, right?)

Iron Man does some cool holo-hacking.

NO. NO. NO. More casual Cosmic Cube construction just feels wrong. It's bad enough that Reed can do it apparently: http://www.comicboards.com/php/image.php?msg=fantasticfour-2012060202580176&att=wwhwvc2cubes.jpg&fullsize=yes. It really should be specified that the result would be infinitely inferior to the genuine entity embryo envisioned.

The final page looooks cool - in lieu of any decent Avengers action, or scrambling for that matter. And in spite of it looking just like beginning their outer-space defensive launch in AvsX - where hopefully they learned something that we will see.

The final page needs a lot of explaining. Is Thor outside because Mjolnir can open a better and faster warpgate? Are all the Avengers picking up and leaving Earth unguarded with no destination given - probably tracking the Cube signature? Is that a new GoG ship? Is no outside help being called in yet again? What is Thanos thinking with this hit and run tactic if he got his prize?

What're your checks or exes for it?
