I think marvel should name a 100th avenger. I believe moon knight was number 30. That was a good marker - even if it was 31 or 33. I can't think of a better 100th avenger. Blue marvel has had a rough ride and a really big origin story, plus is pretty awesome power wise. If Spider-Man could join now that would be different. If there were plans for the Silver Surfer then that would also be a big thing. Human torch? I don't know.

So could blue marvel be the 100th. Here's who I think we have:

T I p w h c w
H q s s h b v
B b m m b h j
M f t s s w m
T n f d m m
D y r I g q s
U h s l m s s
S r c t s m d
J f t s j a l
C s s w e a c
C s v a I p s
R d s q c h s
C s m s n s b

These are the avengers I fully support, with blue marvel as number 91.this omits a handful of sort of avengers (two gun, Whizzer, flux) and a lot of avengers in training. Counting some of the spin offs - depending really on who makes it back into books- would get near the 100 mark I am sure.

Any thoughts?

You forgot Ironman (Teen Tony) and Doombot, Victor, Alexis/Protector II and Agent Chang (honorary). Jocasta accepted membership in Avengers #197. Also Maria Hill, either she was member during the time she was leader or had honorary status. Not sure if we are counting Nick Fury Jr and Agent Coulson as members. Also Spidergirl might be on call.

Let me see if I can do the list, it is late.
[roll call membership tenure line up]

Avengers 1-100
1. Antman I
2. Wasp I
3.Ironman I
4.Thor I
5. Hulk I
6. Captain America II
7. Rick Jones
8. Hawkeye I
9. Quicksilver
10. Scarlet Witch I
11. Swordsman I
12. Hercules
13. Black Panther
14. Vision II
15. Black Knight

NOTES: Though listed Rick Jones was honorary issue #1, he wasn't with the team at the end of the issue and only hung out with the team because of his connection to the Hulk.
Wonder Man applied for and was accepted for membership, but was under going tests and evaluations when he revealed he was a traitor and I am assuming had the offer taken off the table. A case could be made the same for Swordsman and had it reinstated when Thor himself petitioned and gave a strong recommendation.

Avengers 101-200
16. Black Widow
17. Mantis
18. Moondragon
19. Beast
20. Two Gun Kid
21. Hellcat
22. Whizzer
23. Vance Astro
24. Martinex

28. Aleta
29. Nikki
30. Captain Marvel I
31. Ms. Marvel I
32. Wonderman
33. Falcon
34. Jocasta

Notes: It was noted in Marvel Team Up they were given Avengers ID cards, I also wondered if the Avengers were aware of Starhawk and Aleta's connection. It is quite possible that Mar-Vell was indeed a reserve along with Ms. Marvel. Jocasta was offered Avengers membership and accepted in Avengers #197. Its possible Two Gun Kid was given status helping the Avengers against Kang and Moondragon was granted full status.

Avengers 201-300

38. Starfox
39. Mockingbird

46. Doctor Druid
47. Marina
48. Yellowjacket II
49. Demolition Man

Finesse, Hazmat, Mettle, Reptil, Striker, Lightspeed, White Tiger, and X-23 were all made "Avengers 3rd Grade" in Avengers Academy #39.

Surely that counts more than the many honorary members who people consider canonical Avengers. They've been trained by Avengers. They've gone on missions as Avengers. They got security clearance. So why leave them out?

They're certainly more Avengery than the Young Avengers other than Stature, Vision 2.0, and Noh-Varr. Have the others ever actually gone on any Avengers missions? Hasn't it been more like them going off on their own before being chased down by the Avengers who then team up with them?

Also, by my count, Ava Ayala is White Tiger V.

There was Hector Ayala, then the one from Wundagore in Heroes For Hire, then Kasper Cole, then Angela Del Toro before Ava.

Vance Astro is from an alternate Universe where he was suspended animation for 120 plus years. Justice is from our universe .

I remember that, I just looked it up and they are considered more associate level what ever that means. That would bring it up to 147. I just thought, did Victoria Hand have honorary status? Captain America referred to her as "one of them." Squirrel Girl? She was in one of the meetings.
Skaar and Red She Hulk. For whatever reason she was with the Avengers when they fought the Serpent and his followers.

Maybe one day I'll redo a list with honorary, in training, actual members.

Major Astro aka Major Victory was from a timeline where Vance grew up to be an astronaut, got trapped in his life support suit and went on to become a founder of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Major Astro went back in time to stop his younger self from becoming an astronaut. Young Vance's latent mutant powers were triggered during this meeting. Young Vance was later aged up to a teenager and then again to a college age adult at which time he became the superhero Marvel Boy and joined the New Warriors. After he served a prison sentence for accidentally killing his abusive father he took the name Justice.

Honestly I think Justice should be about Franklin's age but we're not supposed to speculate on that I think.

Seems like Hand did have some sort of status. I haven't read the appearances of Squirrel girl while she was the nanny for Luke and Jessica's baby, so I can't weigh in there.

Maybe one day I'll redo a list with honorary, in training, actual members.

It's really kind of strange how some heroes are forced to train or be probationary, while others are just handed membership when they have no experience. Kid Nova comes to mind. Smasher too, though at least she was older.

What are your thoughts on the Avengers Resistance? I'm the only poster that I've noticed who thinks they are equivalent to the New Avengers during that era, who weren't official either. They called themselves Avengers and had former Avengers on the team to give that merit. Sure, some of them are pretty C-List, but that's not a factor in whether or not they served as Avengers. They did team up with the main team on one occasion too.

I counted them in the beginning, but I think they were calling themselves Avengers, but no one had the authority to call themselves Avengers. Hank being a founder has the status to form a team. The argument could be made Luke Cage's team were not actual Avengers, but I think Commander Rogers considered them time served.

I thought I read somewhere he met with them to see where they stood and felt as Avengers, and most of them were made reserves. I think that was applied to Justice, Tigra, Rage. I think Gauntlet might have been offered (off panel) but was not interested, he was an instructor, and he might have yelled Avengers Assemble, so there might be a cause there for argument. But Debrri resigned, I think Diamondback was offered a government job, Night Thrasher and Scarlet Spider and Slapstick were New Warriors, not sure about the girl Lizard (I forget her name) and Ultra Girl (her I would have liked to see stick around.)

The same could be said for Captain America's Secret Avengers during the Civil War. That Included Young Avengers, Nighthawk, Cable, Human Torch, "Daredevil" Storm, Silouette, Arachne, Asp, Battlestar, Black Crow, Black Mamba, Cloak, Coldblood, Dagger, Gladiatrix, Goliath (Bill Foster), Lectronn, Lightbright, Living Mummy, Network, Night Nurse, Prodigy, Shroud, Solo, Timeslip, Typeface.

Avengers featured: Cap, Black Panther, Falcon, Firebird, Hercules, Justice, Invisible Woman, Living Lightning, Spider Woman, Monica, Machine Man, Triathlon, Spiderman, Tigra, Spider Woman (Skrull), Stingray, Rage, Cage.

I think the team was given the name by the press. But I think Bishop said in one issue "I thought we were the Avengers.

I always wished the writers and or editors clarified it for the characters during their time on the book(s). Captain Marvel II referred to Marrina as an Avenger when she pleaded her case to Doctor Druid.

That's the way everyone but me seems to look at it. But for me, having three ex-Avengers on the team, calling yourselves Avengers, and behaving heroically should be enough to count. Justice isn't a founder obviously, but I believe he was one of the few characters with enough Avengers spirit for Cap to reach when Morgan Le Fey had taken control of reality with the Twilight Sword. And he wasn't even a member yet!

I didn't know that Cap had met with them to discuss it. Interesting! I'd love to know what issue that was.

Of the Avengers Resistance characters who weren't already Avengers, Komodo and Diamondback are the two I would have liked to have stuck around. Ultra Girl too to a lesser extent.

I remember Bishop saying that. At the time, Doc Samson certainly appeared to be functioning as an Avenger with the Pro-Registration side too. He helped them deal with a sidebar threat or two. And Sabra participated in that big last battle.

As for Cap's team during Civil War, I feel like it's been really crappy of him to rely on those guys when the chips were down and he was desperate, but then when he gets put in charge of the Avengers again, he loses their cell numbers.

For instance, when he was recruiting a teleporter early in the Hickman run, why go after Manifold instead of Cloak? (other than the convenient coincidence of how I believe Manifold is somehow related to the incursion storyline going on with the Illuminati. I'm not caught up with those issues quite yet)

The part that bugs me is the inconsistency in how the questionable membership statuses can be regarded. So when if/when things get clarified, they need to stick to the same formula for every situation.

If you need a founder being involved in the creation for a team to be legit, how is it that SHIELD can form the founder-less Secret Avengers? The Hulk does get involved later on, but it has always felt like his founder status at some point got handed to Cap.

Nick Fury's Black Ops team with Sabretooth and Kraven on it shouldn't even be in the conversation, yet there they are on Wikipedia. Not that Wikipedia counts for anything, but still.

S.H.I.E.L.D. calling themselves Avengers I think is more related to the MCU, but I also don't think the issues of 1-16 mean they were Avengers, they called in members then wiped the mission from them. I thought it should have been titled Avengers Initiative. That what Maria Hill referred to it as in the Marvel Now #0. Secret should have been the Illuminati or Doctor Strange handling the mystic department.

Now that the Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D. have a working agreement (when did they not get along? when did Cap step down? why does Maria Hill act like she wasn't part of the Avengers? (I do think once she was on the team Bendis was "uhh, what do I dod with her?")) they are a different branch of the Avengers, therefore Hill, Coulson and Fury are Avengers.

I wish they had a manual come out for the 50th anniversary. Interviewing the writers and artists from that era. Clarifying things up. The great Mar-Vell debate. Was he a reserve member or not?
