Jessica Jones 001 (2018)

Again with the disregard for established canon...

Jess should acknowledge herself as an ex-Avenger, right?! ARGH! Carol has yet another crazy hair day. Misty's bionic arm is lazily called cybernetic and is needlessly redesigned yet again. HOWEVER, other than the former serious concern and the two latter frivilous nitpicks this was quite engaging in spite of the, also, detracting transition from dead to alive and well between chapter one and two.

This relaunch of a JJ title gives this ongoing star TV character new promise and breath in the MU comicbook world. So, Bendis entrusted Thompson with the character...uhh, but what exactly does that mean? If the title tanks then no writer can pick up with Jessica Jones? Fortunately, this was a comicbook fun new case for the P.I. despite the confusion the reader suffers not being given any viable explanation how she can suffer a gunshot through the head (a neat cliffhanger) to waking in a hospital bed without a wound or evidence of Jones' 'death'.

The issue opens in media res, she's restrained, with something apparently more durable than handcuffs, and conversing with the mystery big bad, her captor (and assassin-wannabe?). Chapter one has the crime to be investigated, the frame up, the welcome Matt Murdock guest appearance (his fellow Defender identity unknown to Jess?), the notable case clues, and that excellent cliffhanger for a a premiere. Chapter two has the baffling resurrection, the welcome Doc Strange and Misty Knight appearances, the fun and friendly superhero cameos galore, and another excellent twist ending with a guitar wielding monster hunter.

-The artstyle is much more palatable/conistent than the previous JJ volume, imo.
-The chronological fit of the two timeframes with the new Avengers post-premiere line-up is annoyingly as ambiguous as ever.
-The clue that the big bad has Jess dressed in 70s Ms.Marvel garb is intriguing.
-The family angle with Luke and Dani plays well so far.
-The fact that Misty's ACD (Aberrant Crimes Division) organization and duties is a part of the FBI is interesting reveal (and not just a Sentry plot device).
-The gimmick imagery in the Kate Hawkeye series where arrow f/x point to notable clues feels vastly improved upon here with P.I.photos f/x.
-The solicited images of Chapter 3 and 4 make it look like the story fun will keep up the good pace so far.

Does this premiere make a case for YOU to put this on your pull list? Do YOU feel this should be better or worse than her previous run? Better or worse than her Neflix show?
