I'm looking for a list of the best issues of batman. No graphic novels or miniseries (sorry Long Halloween, DKR, Year One, and Killing Joke fans).

Its always seemed to me that when people name the best batman stories, they just rattle off gns or trades. What are some obscure gems that get passed over because they havent been reprinted in trade?

Nightwing, Robin, and Batgirl all count as well ofcourse.

Detective comics #594 "ecstacy" (spelling may be wrong). only name villian mentioned is scarface, and also has local gotham detective Joe Potato. There is a running first person perspective from a stock trader I belive, that O.D.'d on some drugs purchased from scarface, and starts blowing up places associated with the drug trade, including the ventriquolist club. This is also the first issue of tec I ever bought, so i'm sure that has something to do with my loving this story.

"Year One" wasn't first published as a miniseries or a one-volume "original graphic novel"; it was originally just a four-issue story arc within the pages of the regular "Batman" title. I admit it was later reprinted as a TPB. But you include it in your list of things that are off limits for this thread.

So are you basically saying that what you want is the "best" Batman stories that fall into the category of "got published in one or more issues of the regular monthly Bat-titles and never got reprinted in any sort of trade paperback under any circumstances"?

I can live with that, if that's what you mean; I just want to be sure I understand what sort of stories are absolutely "out of bounds" for your purposes, before I try to give you a list of favorites that fit within your rules! \:\)

I don't think ANY of these issues have been reprinted anywhere at all. \:\)

Some that come to mind:

Detective 439: "Night of the Stalker". Batman chases down a bunch of hoods like the scum that they are BUT with a twist ending.

Detective 397: "Paint a Picture of Peril"

Detective 395: "Secret of the Waiting Grave": This one has been reprinted numerous times so you may be able to find it without buying the original

Detective 408: "The House that Haunted Batman"; Not what the title implies. Story reprinted in Detective 477

Detective 572: Detective story without compare. Batman meets his superior.

Batman 236: "Wail of the Ghost Bride": A good supernatural story.

Batman 237:"Night of the Reaper" : Reprinted numerous times

Batman 239: "silent Night, Deadly Night"

Batman 253" "Who Knows What Evil...": Batman meets The Shadow

Are these "The Best"? Probably not, but they are standalone stories that I have enjoyed since the day they came out. I have read these issues more then I have any others that I have. There are a ton of good stories that I didn't mention because they are the ones that ALWAYS get mentioned. Seek these out, cheap. If you pay too much for it, no story is enjoyable. Good luck!
