I'd have to say BATMAN: THE CULT, which was originally a 4-issue mini-series by Jim Starlin & Berni Wrightson. It was a very bloody and violent and controversial tale for it's time, back in 1988. Still is, in my opinion. And really good! My only complaint (and not about the mini itself), was that other than a one-line mention in the main Batman comic...the series didn't fully follow the ramifications of the events from The Cult, even though the comic was also being written by Starlin at the time. I guess DC wanted to keep the two seperate.

You might like "Batman: Gotham County Line." I Haven't read it myself, but it's about a serial killer and it was done by the same team behind "30 Days of Night."

I would say of the ones I have read probably Batman: Year Two. In it Batman nearly gets killed by the Reaper several times, the Reaper by killing people actually lowers the crime rate in Gotham City, the Reaper is possibly the scariest Batman villain I have ever seen, it has the best story of Joe Chill, Batman comes to question his methods, and Batman even starts using a gun. It also has this feeling of overwhelming darkness that is like swallowing Batman and the Reaper is such a force to be reckoned with that even Batman thinks he might not be able to handle him.

This mini-series was good, but be fore warned that it's a bit of a divergence from batman status-quo. Don't expect much "real-world" detective work.
