It certainly improved with season 4 and Robin showing up.

I think Detective Yin left because James Gordon was becoming more prominent and was a more traditional fit as an ally.

Didn't a throwaway line in one episode say she'd went to Metropolis' PD? I vaguely recall that in a writer interview...

Like in real life, things change on The Batman over time.

In the first season Bruce's friend Ethan who appeared regularly on the show became the villain known as Clayface. Therefore Ethan stopped appearing regularly on the show.

In the second season Bruce teamed up with Ellen to take down villains several times. In what I consider a mistake the writers of the show towards the end of the second season had Batman not want to form a permanent partnership with her because Batman felt she could not be her sidekick.

Why did Batman think he should have a sidekick in the first place and that a sidekick could take Ellen's place makes zero sense. \:\-\|

Anyways by the third season Ellen Yin was taken off the the show by the writers to make way for Commissioner Gordon and Batgirl. Batgirl became the sidekick Batman needed and supposedly according to Batman Ellen could not be.

In the fourth season Ethan Bennett returned in one new episode where he was cured and made normal again. Robin was introduced and this marked a decrease in the appearances of Commissioner Gordon.

Supposedly Ellen Yin is still around in Gotham City offscreen, as is Ethan Bennett and Chief Rojas but the writers of the show have decided to focus solely on Batman's sidekicks and his Justice League so no interactions between Batman and Ellen is shown.
