I know Black Mask is a powerful figure in Gotham's criminal underworld, but does he have some sort of legitimate business front?

Was, he's been dead for quite a long time now. Catwoman shot him dead.

>but does he have some sort of legitimate business front?

Yes, he had. As Roman Sionis (his real name) he was chairman of his father's company (the source of his family's wealth); Janus Cosmetics.

A perfectly good villain, wasted. That era of Batman was filled with bizarre editorial decisions.

That's him

War Games was over three years ago now. He was killed since then.

The most bizarre was bringing him back like that in the first place, and in a form so unrecognisable he might as well have been someone else. He went from macabre villain with gangster vibe, to the manic, giggling loon from War Games.

Black Mask was in in Winick's run along with Red Hood as recently as March '06, I think. He was killed since then?

I'm confused. Was he killed, brought back to life, and then shot by Catwoman and once again killed?

Sorry, it's just that I've been writing a Batman thing and Mask is kind of a main character. I was trying to keep it all in continuity, which is increasingly difficult with DC's "crisis" nonsense.

Check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Mask_(comics)

He was killed during OYL

No.

Black Mask's history hasn't been altered or change.

Yeah, the mobster woh ran the false face society was much more entertaining, and there was always the "I want to destroy Bruce wayne" sub plot, because of the takeover of janus. The skeleton just didn't do it for me.
