Subject: Question for the board (yes, YOU) Posted Tue Jan 12, 2010 at 02:33:01 pm EST (Viewed 159 times) |

Seriously honest legitimate question here. For example, one could argue that, say, Captain Marvel (DC) beats Darkseid because Darkseid's lost to Superman and Orion. But another could argue it wouldn't be that easy since Darkseid's no-sold attacks from Supergirl and Lobo (separately, but yeah). Both happened. Both are valid. But trying to get people to agree is fruitless. In some cases, the defeated feel like winners (I won't name names, cause of board rules). So my question is, why do you personally battleboard?

There are times I've wanted to discuss a particular character, but when I go to that character's board I find that the last post is from a month ago. Here you are more likely to get a discussion. I enjoy a good debate, and there are posters here that I really like to have discussions with. LGU and Daveym are examples of guys who can back up what they're saying, either with scans or with a logical argument. I may still disagree, but it's an intelligent conversation, not resorting to "Hulk beats everything" and "Thanos pwns!!!". There are some posters that I generally don't read their posts or bother debating with (either because of rampant fanboyism or just really hard to read with font/punctuation choices), but you get that anywhere you go. ~Hat~

and tournys. Story story story blah blah blah.....when is someone going to get punched? No really the stories are good(if indeed they are good) but inevitably it is going to lead to conflict, even in soap opera's so we (the battleboard) just cut to the chase.

Comics are a hobby and have been since i was young so diving in and engaging in the puzzle solving nature of Battle debates is like doing a Sudoku, it's a lot of fun as i can put all those years long reading and amassed trivia to some purpose as well as develop my thoughts on certain subjects and put them into some clear order in my mind. This board is quieter and more leisurely than other Battleboards so usually my first port of call when online. I've been here near enough ten years now and the board does wax & wane in terms of traffic and hostility, things seem to have slowed down in recent years though maybe the rise of other boards is to blame as much as the decline of the industry...

All characters are on topic, so you get the Hulk fans, the Thor fans, the Cosmic fans, etc. That variety of detailed knowledge is fun when discussing "how would so and so act in xyz situations". It's important to remember that ANY character can beat any other character. that makes the odds 1/100. Then you start figuring out power levels, abilities, etc., that would influence the odds of one character beating an other. The irony is: on this board, if a character defeats another character 80/100 times, we focus on those 80 times. The paid writers and editors, however, look at how valuable the story can be if you focus on those 20 times in which the underdog wins. ![]()

I love comics, i love the characters, I love comicbook fights. But, I'll be honest, there's a little bit of schadenfreude in it. Some people on this board are laughable fanboys and I think they're comical. They are sort of a check on my comic obsession. I'll read a posters derranged diatribe against another poster or a character that rivals their own personal fettish, and then I think "well, okay I collect a lot of comics and I'm clearly invested, but I haven't taken it THAT far." ---the late great Donald Blake

Good question. I do it because I enjoy it, mostly. TV is crap and I have to do *something* in between soul-destroyingly boring shifts at work ![]() I like battle board because you get a pretty even spread of knowledge; you can come on here having read every single appearance of 50 different characters and still learn something new from someone else. I like the community on here; not a substitute for talking crap in the pub with your mates by any means but it's cheaper and doesn't involve a hangover ![]() I guess mostly though, I Battle Board because despite my super-cool exterior I am at heart a massive geek and like to think about what might happen if the Hulk punched Superman in the face as hard as he could. ![]() Cheers. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Seriously, been reading Marvel almost exclusively since oh ~1972 I keep telling my buddies that have long since dropped out...its the best time to be a comic book fan. In my day we didn't battle boards, previews, scans daily, battle scans. It's great fun. I mostly just lurk here and chime in with occasional fights and silliness. And I've learned a lot about DC and other characters. Also Superman beats Mighty Mouse because MM is just a cartoon, duh.

Yeah I don't get involved in a lot of debates, as it does seem like beating a dead horse. Despite it all I'll put my two cents in every now and then cause it may be pointless at times, but what can I say its still fun for me. I enjoy lurking around a lot too as I did here for years before I ever decided to post. All in all its just fun to learn about comics and characters that I'm unfamiliar with. I thought I knew a sh#tload of comic knowledge and then I came here and found out no matter how good ya are theres always someone better. I can embrace my inner geek here at these comic boards and I'm def glad they are pretty respectful when it comes to keeping things civil. Too much hate goin on at a lot of other boards. Really don't see why posters at other comic boards have to talk so much trash just b/c someone doesn't see things their way. At the end of the day its probably some chunky bald guy with a jar of Vaseline sitting next to his computer, but ah well who am I to judge. Everyone here seems pretty cool and easy going though. Ah but I digress, another reason I enjoy this is the tourneys, sure you get a no prize victory, but honestly its cool to see what everyone comes up with and I must say when I won one last year I felt pretty darn neat. Comics are something I've been into since I was 7 (I'm now 24). Like someone said earlier of all Alvaro's different boards, the battle board is definitely the best b/c of the constant flow of traffic. Plus, everyone's inner fanboy cries out to debate which character can defeat the other. I've gotten a couple of my friends into comics over the years, but I can't really talk about it with em like I can here, so I guess this is my outlet. Thanks for being my online comic psychiatrist battle boarders haha.

Okay, when I say fanboy, there are several names that come to mind (that I don't need to mention) that correspond with Thor, Hulk, Superman, and maybe, your occasional Wonder Woman and Thanos fan. But, the truth is, we're all guilty of this shit I think at times. Some of us are just more shameless, oblivious, honest, or discourteous about it. This board is both atrocious, ridiculous, and a blast all at the same time. cheers, ---the late great Donald Blake

likes Marvel characters (and a few DC). Apart from that, most if not all people on this board are pretty intelligent (which would probably be a big surprise to many people). It is a shame that I cannot post and answer more often but I have a life to live - the battleboard is only occasional fun after all.
