Subject: Galactus, Ego and the Stranger Posted Sat Jul 23, 2011 at 10:35:29 am EDT (Viewed 780 times) |

According to the recent storyline in Astonishing Thor, the Stranger created Ego, the Living Planet (and his hidden brother, Alter Ego) probably as a scientific experiment. He also gave both planets some of his own personality traits.
So how does this colour the Stranger's relations with Galactus, given that Galactus has tried to devour his creation twice? Is it likely that the Stranger intervened in some subtle way to stop this (i.e. by manipulating events to ensure that Thor was in the vicinity the first time Galactus encountered Ego) or would he have taken the opposite view that facing the threat of Galactus would be a good test for his subject. Perhaps he even led Galactus to Ego in some way.
And then there's Ego's participation in the Elders' plot to kill Galactus. How much did the Stranger know about that and would Galactus want an answer to that very question too?
A possible subject for a future storyline (or some fan fiction)?

How could the Stranger have created Ego? Didn't Ego already have an origin?

The Stranger apparently arranged for other origins for Ego to get out as disinformation.
For those who haven't read AT (the storyline starts well but peters out) The Stranger got certain methods and formulae from the Collector which he used for creating Ego. In return for the Collector's aid, he created a second world called Alter Ego which he gave to the Collector for his collection, and which was imprisoned in an empty universe within a tesseract. The story is about the Stranger arranging for Alter Ego's escape (which Thor unwittingly obtains) in order to reunite the brothers - he knows they will battle each other and he wants to see whether freedom or captivity breeds the strongest will.

Ego & bro briefly fight. Alter Ego is urged by Thor to stop the fight - which he does, but Ego is still enraged and blasts him to bits. Ego then comes to his senses. A diminshed Alter Ego becomes a moon that orbits Ego & they go off to bond. Thor gives a tongue lashing to the Stranger who figures out he may have learned something anyway.

yeah, plus lots of big panels that make the story a very quick read - never a good thing given the current price of comics

The Stranger had a pretty good showing in this. Thor acknowledged his near-omnipotence and the only conflict between them was in the first issue when the Stranger casually blasted Thor unconscious and far off into space in order to stop him from interfering with Ego's progress.
After all of the rotten shows of power Galactus has had recently, it's good to see one of Marvel's original three cosmic high-enders being treated as a being of awesome might.

I find the moon thing to be fairly interesting honestly.
