Hey guys,

I have been collecting comics fro about 10 years now, but have never picked up an issue of FLash, mainly due to my budget, but now I have been getting the new Flash. I followed Wally through JLA titles and loved him. I thought he was very quick with his words(no pun intended). Kinda like Spiderman with one liners and such. Here is my question:

What was Barry Allen like? What were his most notable characterisitcs? I have never read a single issue with him in it, so I have no idea how writers write him. Thanks.

Barry was great. He was the epitome of the Silver Age hero. He was very smart. He was a police chemist and used his knowledge of science to develop different ways to use his powers to deal with everything that the Rogues would throw at him. Using the terminology of the time, he was "square." Little on the conservative side but given the chance, he enjoyed showing off. I liked seeing the competitive side of him in the Superman/Flash trade that came out a couple years ago. When he needed to be, he was completely badass. I read this one issue after something really bad happened and he was drugged, being really paranoid. He though the JLA was out to get him. He took on Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern all at once! And they had a devil of a time taking him down. One thing you have to know, though, is that the running gag was Barry was always late for any date or appointment despite being the fastest man alive. They counterbalanced this later with Wally being uptight about always being on time. For further reading, I recommend the Flash archives. They're pricey but you get every penny's worth of Silver Age zaniness and creativity. On the cheaper side, there's the Superman/Flash trade, and in the coming months a "Essential" Flash trade paperback and a "Greatest Flash Stories Ever Told" trade coming out. I'm not sure if the latter is all Barry or if it's a mix of Barry and Wally stories.

JLA: Year One, by Mark Waid and Barry Kitson? My favorite characterization of Barry Allen and Hal Jordan rests in this book: young, inexperienced, and fresh.

Damn! Can't believe I forgot that one. It's one of my faves. The "sequel" The Brave and the Bold focusing on Hal and Barry is pretty good, too. It gives you a good sense of Barry and Hal through their careers.
