I stopped by the comic shop on Friday and looked through the old issues to find this gem. Power pack is an interesting concept as Im sure I would not have liked it in my youth. I never liked kid sidekick characters and always wondered why they were trying to shove them down our throats. I knew of its existence in the MU but would have never tried it, but now as an adult, I can appreciate just what this series had to offer.
First off, Louise Simonson writes the plots really well as they have situations that would be relatable to kids. In this issue the Power pack kids have to return to the sewers to retrieve their schoolbooks after forgetting them last issue. They get captured by the morlocks, one of whom wants to use them as replacements for her own dead kids.
The dialogue is really well written. There is a very fine line to tred when adults try to write authentic kid dialogue and she does it well, giving each kid in the pack a distinct voice. I like it when Alex reminds the kids to use their code names to protect their identities.
The art is also really well done. Most comicbook artists seem incapable of drawing realisticly proportioned adolecents and teenagers. Even the great Romita jr drew them like stunted dwarves in Daredevil. June Brigeman is the rare comic book artist who could draw characters who looked in proportion to their ages.
Over all, it was a really unique series (at least at the start) and fun that it was threaded into the MU so tightly.
