Subj: knock-off better than original?

I was thinking about situations where the 2nd version, the knock-off, might be better than the original. Not exactly sure what to define as "knock-off" but that can be left to interpretation.

the Flash Gordon comic strip was a clear knock-off of Buck Rogers, but people tend to prefer it (not me personally). To take it further, I guess you could say Star Wars itself is a Flah Gordon knock-off.

I guess you could say that the Mad Max series world was a knock-off of "a boy and his dog". But Im not really certain about this idea.

I'm having trouble thinking of a really clear knock-off that became more popular.
