Subj: Eternals 2008
Posted: Sun Jul 06, 2008 at 03:15:56 pm EDT

Issue #2 hits this week and I was looking at the preview. So far it looks like the series will just focus on the Eternals interaction with the Iron Man and his cronies in the Initiative. Its just annoying to see this, I'd rather they continue to explore the new story of the Celestials, cosmic entities, and leave the House of M/Civil War/Invasion stuff to the Avengers and other Marvel Universe titles. Come to think of it, other titles like Moon Knight is another title that seems to be lagging behind the rest of the Marvel Universe with Iron Man still running the Initiative. These stories problaby would've been more timely in 2007 when Initiative was the major event being pushed, but not this year.

Issue #3 is the issue that will make or break this series for me when the Dreaming Celestial shows up. If the Knaufs can write a good story without it being convoluted or cliched or an extension of Iron Man: Director of SHIELD, then I'll continue picking up this series otherwise it goes in the dust bin.

Acuna's art while eyecatching seems to be lacking in terms of body features of the characters. The guy can get the facial features correct which I'm sure totally has to do with Photoshop but to his credit at least he doesn't do Greg Land-esque swipes either. However, when it comes to drawing complete proportional bodies he is almost completely off and has to resort to some panel trickery to avoid drawing the entire figure. His painted style is very similar to Clayton Crain. But where Acuna fails and where Crains excels is in drawing complete human figures. I guess it would be bettter if Crain was brought in to draw this book instead.
