Subj: Looking into Marvels Big Events
Posted: Fri Aug 01, 2008 at 02:52:02 pm EDT
I remember when Quesada said in an interview that the good thing about the Marvel U, is that it does not need a crisis. Everything more or less stays the same. And he did say that there were 3 genies he wanted to put back in the bottles. The same idea that made a comic popular and readable, is still what drives the books. Yet, in the last few years there have been rather big changes.
1. House of M. This was the first big change, and No More Mutants sums it up nicely. Mutants are supposed to be a small minority, hated and fear by normal humans. When even 30% of the world population are mutants, then the mystique is lost. Mutants need to be a tiny percent of the world. the X-men will defend humans (even when they hate them) from other mutants. Thats what sells the book. Now with emphasis that mutants come in all shapes and sizes.
2. Civil War. Forget the actual war, look at the aftermath. Now all super powered individuals need to register and (the young ones) go to training? This would work in the DC Universe maybe, but not here. Sure it makes sence, but this is a big change. This forces every character in the Marvel U to deal with Shield at some time in their books. Whether to report to their superiors, or to run from being captured. The registration act has to go. Its to big of a change.
3. WWH - What was the point of this rather than to have the world fear the Hulk? Even the heros. This is a good example of a big event, with little change. The Hulk returned, smashed everyone, saved the day, and then was captured. (He does escape later). Nothing really changes. The only thing it did was reveal the Illuminati to the world, which makes for a nice story. Stark, Reed, Richards, and Strange are not perfect, and this mistakes shines greatly.
4. SI - this can go either way. If the Skrulls win, and CW is undone it can work. But then the heros will work together, and the trust back. Who knows. If the Hulk saves the day, then he is redeemed and there goes the point (one of) of WWH. If House of M is reversed, and the mutants save the day (there goes House of M). I would love to see the last one come true, but yet that was the one event that got it right.
