Because of this I am going to quit a whole handful of Marvel titles including

Mighty Avengers, New Avengers, Dark Avengers, Thor, Iron Man, Uncanny X-Men, Wolverine & Hulk

Incredible Hercules is a maybe at the moment.

Will stick with Amazing Spider-Man, Captain America, X-Men Forever (despite the $3.99 price tag), Nova, Guardians of the Galaxy & Exiles.

This isn't really surprising and will lead to the digital distribution of comics. It's also going to lead to a huge increase in comic "piracy". Comics are the music industry of the 90s.

From a business perspective, this is an awful move. While the key for any business is to increase (but not always maximize) profits, it's also important for businesses to increase their customer base. And here is the most important part: For periodical comics, increaseing the customer base and bringing in more readers is MORE important than maximizing profits. It's the same for most periodicals. Marvel is a business entirely dependent on repeat customers.

Marvel does have somewhat of a monopoly, they are the only place to go to read Spider-Man comics. But their profit margins for a comic are supposedly huge, reported in the NYT? to be about 38%. That's huge in business.

So now Marvel is entering into a death spiral. They can't increase readership because of cost. They can't get more advertising dollars because readership is low. And so on.

Now the solution is going to be digital distribution, whether legal or illegal. It automatically cuts out the retailers and distributors resulting in a huge decrease of costs. But also the printing and paper costs are gone as well.

As I said earlier, this is the music industry. People felt that they weren't getting their value from their purchases, so they pirated the songs off the internet for free. It's not exactly like the music industry for four key differences. 1) Comic readers in general are more tech savy than music listeners and it will be easier for them to download comics. 2) The culture of downloading is much different as it's much more commonplace today than it was 15 years ago. 3) Comic readers are much more loyal to their comics, more fanatic. While a music listener might just by stop buying CDs, a comic reader is going to have more trouble doing that. 4) There are alternative ways to listen to music instead of buying CDs, like listening to the radio or watching a music station, etc. For comics, there aren't other legal alternatives.

I think it's absolutely disgusting to charge more for what???? The same amount of pages and story as the 1980s (albeit on better paper with better ink).

Out of that list I only get Uncanny X-Men anyway. I'll stick with that, but it will probably be at the cost of a $2.99 title.

I stopped buying trades after they put the price up by $10 - $15 for no additional content.

Putting up the prices won't maximise profits OR attract new readers. Is it a huge mistake that will destroy the industry... probably not, but time will tell.

Sorry, but if they think that they have to keep jacking the prices and lowering the quality of their product to "compete with video games", then they've choked on their own runny crap and are going to be their own executioners.
Comic books are a completely different form of entertainment in terms of how they are entertained and in production value. I give Marvel another decade before it folds.

HMMMMM...look at the titles that have been "increased" and compare it to a statement made in the artical...about keeping "top talent" on the books. Notice now MANY of the titles are Brian Michael Bendis books? Is Bendis and Loeb worth that increase???? I say not. And like alot of the posters here I didn't pick up Dark Avengers and I will not be going back to the Ultimate books for the $3.99 price point. I don't pick of any of the Dark Reighn minis either for the $3.99 price point either.

Eh, the only titles that are affected that I actually buy are Uncanny and Thor, so that's a whopping $2 extra per month (and Thor comes out so infrequently that it's practically just Uncanny).

So was it absolutely disgusting each time Marvel's books increased in price between the 1980's and now?

Comics have been an expensive specialty item long before the prices started heading into $3.99 territory. If this is going to destroy the industry, it's going to be as the latest part in an ongoing trend, not because this individual action is greedy or stupid.

$2.99 is my cut off point. Any higher and I walk.
I made this rule for myself when I signed the mortgage papers to my house. I just can't afford to pay anymore than $2.99 for my house.
This list only affects one of the comics I read. Thor.
I don't read it anymore.
If any of the other Marvel titles rise in price I will not pay it. Simple as that.
I'm sure I'm not the only one.
I will not be downloading comics off the net either.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way about digital comics.
and in time Marvel will see this to be true.

Ugh! I'm on the computer al day at work! The last thing that I want to do is go to my computer at home to Marvel Digital Comics.
