Unless I'm hallucinating, I recall a story about an artist that Stan Lee loved who (theoretically) would've been illustrating Lee's work instead of Kirby. Except for the fact that he died young in an accident of some sort.

I think you're referring to Joe Maneely, who died in 1958. He never got a chance to see the Marvel Age of Comics.
