Despite the unusual subject, I am going somewhere with this.

In Amazing Fantasy #15, the cop asks Spider-Man why he didn't try to stop the Burglar. "That's your job," Spider-Man replies. Then said burglar kills Ben Parker and the rest is history.

In Alex Ross' Earth X trilogy, a middle-aged Peter Parker becomes a police officer on a world where everyone has super-powers. Stopping crime is now his job, literally. Luke Cage, always big about getting paid to be a hero, also become a cop.

Now comes Civil War. Peter Parker unmasks and (briefly) becomes a government agent. Fighting crime is his job, complete with a steady paycheck and health benefits. And, as we know, he only turned against registration because of the Negative Zone prison (according to JMS) and the Murderclone Thor (according to Millar). *Not* because he thought using his powers to work for the government would be wrong.

So I have to ask... Would Spider-Man be willing to get paid to fight crime? Or does he have some kind of hang-up about getting paid to use his powers, thinking that's what got Uncle Ben killed (even though he *wasn't* a cop or a superhero at the time, he was just a performer).
