The Lizard but the rumours are they want to move away from the 'created by science' villan.

Electro is also a good fit despite the fact I liked the re-imaganation of him in Ultimate of being younger which Rhys definetly isn't.

I will be ticked if it ends up being the Tinkerer...

The announcement I read on Bleeding Cool a few days ago gave a good solid clue it it the Lizard.

Rhys Ifans Cast As Villain In New Spider-Man Film
Submitted by Brendon Connelly on October 11, 2010 – 3:26 pm (1) comments XHello there! If you are new here, you might want to follow us via Twitter, Facebook, or RSS for updates on this topic.
The drip feed of Spider-Man information from Sony continues. Every time there’s a new press release, I feel like one of those kids who has their Christmas presents parsed out over the holiday as he’s handed the next little sock full of nuts and fruit.

This time around we learn that Rhys Ifans will be playing the film’s villain. However, we don’t learn who this villain is. Surely the casting of Ifans is our best clue so far? And there’s a Marc Webb quote (see below) that refers to Ifan’s “ability to embody both warmth and rage”. Huh?

Echoes from the distance have been saying “Lizard… Lizard…” and that fits Ifans nicely enough. Then the Webb quote seems to only underline the idea, but… well, we’ll see. Eventually.

Here are some bits of the press release. Note how they persist in calling the film “the next installment”:

CULVER CITY, Calif., October 11, 2010 – Rhys Ifans will play the villain, opposite Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, in the next installment of Spider-Man from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios, it was announced today by Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures. The film, to be directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and produced by Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will begin production in December and will be released in theaters nationwide in 3D on July 3, 2012.

Commenting on the announcement, Tolmach said, “We have been very fortunate to attract some of the best actors working today to play the villains in the Spider-Man movies, and it is exciting to see that trend continue with Rhys Ifans. After seeing his performance in our upcoming film Anonymous, we’re in awe of his talent and think he’s the perfect choice to take on this role.”

The filmmakers prefer to not reveal which character Ifans will be playing in the forthcoming film.

Webb added, “What sets the Spider-Man villains apart is the complexity of their relationships with Peter Parker. Rhys’ incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character.”

This quote: “What sets the Spider-Man villains apart is the complexity of their relationships with Peter Parker. Rhys’ incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character” suggests that the villain will have some personal connection to Peter.

At first blush, that rules out villains like Vulture and Electro. But then, Sandman didn't have a Parker connection in the comics either, but his origin was tweaked for SM3.

So I guess I'm saying I have no idea who the villain will be. (Ok, I guess the "warmth" bit rules out Carnage. And I'm pretty sure they're saving the Hypno Hustler for the sequel, Spider-Man 2: Electric Boogaloo)
