I never did understand how right wing jokes were ok but left wing jokes weren't. I guess the left wingers must have no sense of humor? Or at least the ones on this website obviously don't!!!

If I were writing Spider-Man, I'd try to avoid real-world politics altogether, because:

1. It alienates about half of the readership depending on which way they go (right or left). The other half may be amused, but it probably isn't worth it...

2. It tends to date the comic. Spidey meeting Obama at the 2008 inauguration won't be canon ten years from now, since that would considerably age the character.

I don't know that it's meant to be canon even now. Much like Spider-Man meeting Stephen Colbert, I think it was more or less a what if? sort of tale.
