Subj: Retro Review: FF v1 #17

I was going to review Spider-Woman #2 but it is even more Hopelessly Land than the first book. Seriously, the book got worse.

So instead, because I'm almost finished reading the FF Hickman v2 omnibus, I thought I'd review FF 17, which picks up on a plot point where Johnny "offers" to room with Pete.

There's a lot of things I like, no, love about the issue.

I think the art style really is a throwback to the Kirby way of drawing Peter. He's even wearing that blue suit jacket for most of the time.

I like that he's rooming with Johnny Storm and he's so casual about his identity his Spider-Man costume is just laying by his bed.

I like how they're friends but Peter just can't stand living with him.

I like the later half of Hickman's run a lot because several issues take the time to do character focused one shots. An issue or two before this is Willie Lumpkins only appearance, where the F4 go into his body to remove a cancerous tumour.

I liked seeing Peter get angry with Johnny over the smallest of things and I liked the effect in the background of the panel wasn't emotional display, but because his co-workers were screwing around with his invention.

And also, honestly, I liked seeing Peter have fun in the partying panel. You don't see that often.

Spidey only makes one or two more appearances after this in Hickman's run but this was a good sendoff and it was nice to see Hickman write Peter Parker and Johnny Storm rather than Spider-Man and the Human Torch. In fact, I don't think either of them put their costumes on during this issue.
