Well it is different and it has TRON style power lines on it, so that is a plus.

But I remember back when he wore the symbiote/black costume and all the drama in the book and from fans until finally he was back in the original suit again.

So yeah, another costume change/sales gimmick and the Mephisto Mindwipe still stands apparently.

Just can't get excited.

Gotta be honest mate, I can't get excited either. It's another new gimmick. Spencer was hitting quite a few great notes and fixing some of the damage all those years ago...

But Spidey can't be fixed.

The main Marvel icon MADE A DEAL WITH THE ACTUAL DEVIL. I.e. he's damaged goods.

If anybody is still reading and having fun, more power to you but I can't move on as many times as Marvel want to reboot or do whatever. Plus their continuity is totally impenetrable since they decided to have 50 zillion books a month per character.

Also I have a big issue with stories where people find out Peter's identity and it has no real world consequences. Basically if his identity gets found out by someone who wants to kill him, they should IMMEDIATELY reveal it and get him taken out. If someone wants you out of the way they don't dither around. Total bad storytelling and fake suspense.

I bring it up because in Last Remains EVERYBODY seems to know who he is and the previews for the costume strongly imply Kingpin knows. I know they've been hinting it but Last Remains ends with Fisk appearing with unmasked Peter from what I hear. I totally hate this and really puts me off. Because if Kingpin doesn't reveal his identity publically, it's nonsense. If he does however it should have consequences... and ruin Peter forever.

MCU thinks it's trendy to have all the identities on display. Alright. But you can't have classic Spider-Man because he won't be able to get married, hold down a job or be identifiable as one of us. He'll become a full-time superhero with no private life at best. That's not 'one of us' making him nothing more than a generic superhero.

That's why his identity is important.

But since Marvel don't respect the identity and since Marvel thought selling his marriage to the devil was 'heroic', this isn't the 'relateable' Spider-Man I ever knew. It's someone morally bankrupt or generic.

I'm not a regular Spider-Man reader, but I do have quite a few issues of his various titles in my collection. One of the things that I enjoy about a Spider-Man comic is the semi-regular supporting cast. I like the "regular life" parts of his story as much as him beating up Electro.

Oh, new costume? I'm sure I'd get used to it if it stuck around long enough...

I always find it pleasing to see others besides me voice my disgust over how they had Spidey make a deal with the devil.

The newspaper strip version reversed the deal and had it where it was all a dream Peter had. (thank you, Stan!)

Yet the comics for years have to suffer the stigma of a character that is meant for fans of all ages, this means KIDS too, gets so screwed up that he takes an easy out by making a faustian bargain. This is Spider-man, not Johnny Blaze.

In fact I am a bit surprised that Blaze or any of the other Ghost Riders don't sense some great sin hanging over Spiderman and zap him with the penance stare and see if that jogs his memory.

Also doesn't Dr Strange now sense something amiss with him?

As to fixing the Mephisto Mindwipe, well its been so long that some serious Deus ex machina writing is now needed. Some serious time travel, or the reality gem, or the time gem or the cosmic cube are needed at this point. Yet they don't fix the damage, while it is okay TWICE now for Tony Stark to be corrupted and turned evil (Crossing and Superior Iron Man) and the only fix for both was to kill him off and revive him via Deus Ex Machina writing. (Heroes Return, Secret War)

Nick Fury was once long ago believed killed by the Punisher but through some weak writing was brought back.

Yet they do not want to fix one of their flagship characters. Pathetic.

What they should do is negate the deal even if it means Aunt May finally dies...(Again!). Then they could have Peter and MJ spend a bit of time apart to deal with their issues over the matter then of course kiss and make up. Also the assorted heroes should learn of the deal and how the deal's affects may have impacted their own lives and seriously shun Spidey for a long time.

I think 'regular life' is what Spider-Man's whole schtick is. He's NOT Bruce Wayne in that it doesn't really matter of Wayne disappears. You take his normal life away and he ceases to be Spider-Man.

But this is my point. Civil War showed what *should* happen if his identity is exposed. His life should be over and he has to do Spider-Man full time. It sucked. It sucked so bad they had to summon the devil to fix it.

Now we know, there should be tension in his identity being revealed. Yet we have him getting unmasked and identity revealed all over the place again recently.

Now I know it's not confirmed Kingpin knows yet AFAIK but if Kingpin and his goons burst in on unmasked Peter, if there is any conclusion except Kingpin immediately revealing who he is, then Kingpin is written terribly and the story sucks. But if he DOES reveal it, you lose a crucial element of Spider-Man being Spider-Man.

This is why mask should stay on.

If we're being realistic, we know a masked hero is an outdated concept but I've always assumed there's a SHIELD agent covering up Peter's DNA or paying off people to leave well alone. But for years Marvel have this thing, especially in the movies, that Peter's face should be everywhere. Bendis is the worst, he has a total fetish for unmasking Peter (EVERY solo Peter story! And most of his Avengers stuff too).

From what I understand is that if Peter's face is exposed, people who want to KILL him, who have been sent to jail by him, and who want to take him out, should make sure to remember what he looks like and take him out. Like I said before, they explain why Venom didn't used to - and it made sense for him - and Norman they got away with it. Harry too, if he's protecting MJ and Liz. But why would say Taskmaster - who has seen what Petwr looks like - keep it to himself? Next time Peter messes him up, quick.letter to a newspaper to say 'you stopped me, I stopped you.'

If Kingpin doesn't reveal his identity, then any time Pete messes his plans up, what motivation are they going to give for him not doing anything? They tried with Daredevil for years and eventually it came out.

I just don't think it's enough to reverse it. That it happened totally taints Peter and MJ. The only way around it is to have it so someone mind controlled or mind influenced them and cast an illusion of Mephisto so that when they remember they think they did the deed but it turns out they didn't.

Otherwise it's always 'Spider-Man made a deal with the devil willingly.'

The biggest problem of course was his stupid out of character decision to full time join the Avengers and unmask everywhere in the run up to Civil War and then to unmask to the world. Because then they needed to resort to stupid to fix it all. Making Peter a full time Avenger with no private identity took him away from what he is unique for as a hero and therefore made him a tad rubbish actually.

I've been posting to show, look, Marvel nor Peter have learned from their mistakes. I can explain why BND and Slott's stuff may not have worked for me but I can say that they tried to get the essence of Peter right and a lot of that was building him support casts. Then Spider-Verse happened and now Peter has a team of bland generic spider characters. Yay. Is there any difference between Jessica Drew, Silk, Arachne and Spider-Gwen except one of them is blonde? (That said I LOVE Spider-Gwen)

Maybe Peter should do a ouija board to summon Blackheart to ask him to remove everybody's memory of his identity and to remove all these bland Spider-Team people. It would be in character after all.

Side note - I DO like Miles in some continuities. Just not 616. But whatever should happen he should stick around. Boy's done good. And he hasn't sold Ganke to Mephisto yet.

Well to me Spider-Gwen is just an attempt and bringing back Gwen stacy, not as a clone and with super powers.

Marvel did get a lot of negative response when they killed her back in the day.

As to the Mephisto Mindwipe: its a bit late to say it was an Osborn plot or a Mysterio plan. However the time lord Immortus or one of his Kang counterparts is an option.

OR: Peter and MJ learn of the deal and realize how stupid they were. Peter then adjusts the F.F.s' time machine to lock onto the proper time coordinates so that he really DOES go back and not into a parallel timeline. Once there he talks to his past self and tells him to dye his hair either blond or red, put on a fake scar and colored contacts and state that his name is Ben Reilly. Thus the unmasking happens but the world gets a fake name and face and Peter inserts fake birth and tax records into the system.
