I'm curious about Superman and his villians. He's not exactly regarded for his Rogues gallery. But on to my questions:

# Were Luthor and Superman friends? I heard they were really good friends (like best friends) at one point. If so, why WOULDN'T Luthor know that Superman is Clark Kent? Also, were Batman and Luthor ever friendly and or allies at any point?

# Were Brainiac and Superman ever allies, or always enemies? I thought Brainiac was a Legion member before he turned bad. Or was that ANOTHER Brainiac I'm thinking of? How many are there anyway?

# Did the Cyborg Superman and Superman really have a relationship before he became the Cyborg Superman? I know that they knew each other, but how close were they? And how come this guy keeps on dying?

# The Prankster seems cool, but really, how could he be a threat to Supes? He is still just a human.

# I heard the Toyman went straight at one point. What's with the new Toyman? Is the old one still around?

# Is Metallo still alive? It seemed like Luthor pulled out his heart ot something. I'll had to re-read that part of Up Up and Away.

# Aren't Bizarro and Superman kind of allies, not enemies? Ditto for Mr. Mxyznoonecanpronouncehisnameimp?

# When did Darkseid and Superman first encounter each other? How many times have they fought?

I think that's it for now. Thanks.

>
> # Were Luthor and Superman friends? I heard they were really good friends (like best friends) at one point. If so, why WOULDN'T Luthor know that Superman is Clark Kent? Also, were Batman and Luthor ever friendly and or allies at any point?

Pre-Crisis, they were friends as kids. Currently, Superman seems to see Luthor as a man who could've benefitted the world but is too deluded to do so, and Lex sees Superman as all that is wrong with the world.

> # Were Brainiac and Superman ever allies, or always enemies? I thought Brainiac was a Legion member before he turned bad. Or was that ANOTHER Brainiac I'm thinking of? How many are there anyway?

Superman and Brainiac grudgingly allied against Braniac-13, a future model that wanted to replace the original, but the team-up was fraught with compromise and betrayal. Pre-Crisis, they once teamed up to ward off an even smarter alien menace named Grax who threatened them both.

Brainiac 5, a descendant of another Brainiac -- it's as much a title on their homeworld as anything -- is the Legion member, and has never been a Superman opponent. There are 13 Brainiacs, but we've only seen versions of 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 12, and 13.

> # Did the Cyborg Superman and Superman really have a relationship before he became the Cyborg Superman? I know that they knew each other, but how close were they? And how come this guy keeps on dying?

Hank Henshaw was an astronaut accidentally turned into an energy force that can inhabit various forms. He blames Superman for...actually, it never made that much sense, really.

> # The Prankster seems cool, but really, how could he be a threat to Supes? He is still just a human.

He's been amped up with nanotechnology allowing him to carry off massive "pranks." Read "Up, Up and Away" for examples.

> # I heard the Toyman went straight at one point. What's with the new Toyman? Is the old one still around?

Toyman, after a period as a child killer, seemingly reformed, but it recently turned out to be one of Zatanna's mindwipes and was undone.. Another Toyman, a Japanese inventor, was never a criminal in the first place. The current Toyman appears to be a robot of some kind, and wants to find Winslow Schott, the original.

> # Is Metallo still alive? It seemed like Luthor pulled out his heart ot something. I'll had to re-read that part of Up Up and Away.

He's lost the Kryptonite heart and lived before, usually due to backup power sources.

> # Aren't Bizarro and Superman kind of allies, not enemies? Ditto for Mr. Mxyznoonecanpronouncehisnameimp?

Sorta kinda. They don't usually want him dead, at least.

> # When did Darkseid and Superman first encounter each other? How many times have they fought?

Forever People #1 and I don't know, respectively.

> # Were Luthor and Superman friends? I heard they were really good friends (like best friends) at one point. If so, why WOULDN'T Luthor know that Superman is Clark Kent?

Clark didn't tell Luthor his secret. This is a weak spot in the mythos right now, and I expect that Kurt Busiek is going to cover this once he gets around to it.

> Also, were Batman and Luthor ever friendly and or allies at any point?

No.

> # Were Brainiac and Superman ever allies, or always enemies? I thought Brainiac was a Legion member before he turned bad. Or was that ANOTHER Brainiac I'm thinking of? How many are there anyway?

There is a descendant of Brainiac in the Legion, Brainiac 5, who is a hero. (mostly.)

Brainiac is a villain. There's been a few other of his descendants who have time traveled to the present to cause trouble, such as Brainiac 13.

> # Did the Cyborg Superman and Superman really have a relationship before he became the Cyborg Superman? I know that they knew each other, but how close were they? And how come this guy keeps on dying?

Cyborg Superman used an astronaut who was mutated, and encountered Superman once as a villain. He then used the powers he gained to mimic Superman during that period of time when Superman was presumed dead.

> # The Prankster seems cool, but really, how could he be a threat to Supes? He is still just a human.

He's still a human. The plans he executes can cause trouble for Superman. He may not be able to punch Superman out, but if he keeps Superman busy with, say ten thousand banana peels on a bridge making cars fall off a cliff, he can be effective.

> # I heard the Toyman went straight at one point. What's with the new Toyman? Is the old one still around?

Original Toyman is MIA.
There was another Toyman, a Japanese kid who ended up making gear for Batman. He's presumably still around, but we haven't seen him in a while.
The New Toyman seems like a creation of the original.

> # Is Metallo still alive? It seemed like Luthor pulled out his heart ot something. I'll had to re-read that part of Up Up and Away.

Metallo is still alive, just turned off. It'll be interesting when he gets reactivated.

> # Aren't Bizarro and Superman kind of allies, not enemies? Ditto for Mr. Mxyznoonecanpronouncehisnameimp?

Bizarro is... odd. He's not really an archnemesis, but neither is he an ally. He does what he does. Same for Mxy. Sometimes Mxy is all about causing trouble, othertimes he really does care for Superman. It's complicated.

> # When did Darkseid and Superman first encounter each other? How many times have they fought?

I believe their first encounter was in the Superman titles in about 87. They've fought a handful of times.

> # Were Luthor and Superman friends? I heard they were really good friends (like best friends) at one point.

Yes, when Lex lived in Smallville as a teen.

> Also, were Batman and Luthor ever friendly and or allies at any point?

That story is currently being told in BATMAN CONFIDENTIAL.

> # Were Brainiac and Superman ever allies, or always enemies? I thought Brainiac was a Legion member before he turned bad. Or was that ANOTHER Brainiac I'm thinking of? How many are there anyway?

Brainiac is a Superman villain. You’re thinking of Brainiac 5. He is a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes. He is a descendent of the Brainiac who is a member of Superman’s rogues gallery.

Here are two very good links for more information on the various Brainiacs over the years

So?

Well, it depends on the writer. Both characters have been handled different ways (and with Bizarro, there have been several different ones, post-Crisis).

In my perfect world, I wouldn’t call either of them an ally, but neither would get the “enemy” tag, either. Mxyzptlk just likes to have fun. Sometimes, he causes damage and wreaks havoc, but would never do so maliciously. With Bizarro, he just doesn’t know any better.

Oh, and "Mix-yiz-pittle-ick."

> # When did Darkseid and Superman first encounter each other? How many times have they fought?

Early in Byrne’s run. I forget the issue.

Superman issue three, volume two. At the same time, Legends #4 which leads into that issue.

There are plenty of people in Smallville who Clark knew as a kid who aren't aware that he is Superman. Just because you hung out with him in High School doesn't mean that you'd put 2 and 2 together to get Superman.

Yes, Lex is smart, but it'd just never occur to him that Clark would be Superman. His mind refuses to accept the possibility.

Unlike the TV Smallville, comics Clark wore glasses in his youth, which makes all the difference.

It's not out of continuity -- indeed, one of the issues of John Byrne's series Jack Kirby's Fourth World was dedicated to retelling it. Not to mention the fact that Action Comics #650 reasserts the continuity status of JLofA v.1 #183-5, another story in which Superman encountered Darkseid that would have been set before Superman v.2 #3.

Wasn't Lyrl Dox Braniac 3? Since he was effectively lobotomized by his father, I don't know if we'll ever see him again, but still...

I'm not sure he ever "officially" took up the title, or if it was ever established that he was the father of the Brainiac Four seen in a few Legion stories, so I left it up in the air.
