Smithing gods are not limited to hammers only. Still, the hammer is very often their main symbol.
Usually, they are important gods of their respective pantheons.

Sure, I thought about it, and that's possible -- but you'd think that if this was the case, they'd be called the God of Smiths or something similar. That's why I brought up Ares, who is a war god who employs weapons.

Cates, for whatever reason, wants this to be the God of Hammers.
