My Welcome to Cates: https://www.comicboards.com/php/show.php?msg=thor-2019110714465798&layout=thread

My suggestion on how Cates can improve: https://www.comicboards.com/php/show.php?msg=thor-2020020718540119&layout=thread

Issue #3 Bullet-Point Review: https://www.comicboards.com/php/show.php?msg=thor-2020021214221079&search=review&layout=thread

(Funny, LGDB participates in these threads but mysteriously doesn't remember substantive critiques. HUH).

Issue #4 Bullet-Point Review: https://www.comicboards.com/php/show.php?msg=thor-2020031118034415&layout=thread

Issue #5 Break-Down (trying my hardest to like Cates' stories): https://www.comicboards.com/php/show.php?msg=thor-2020062416072299&search=Thor+%235&layout=thread

Issue #6 Break down: https://www.comicboards.com/php/show.php?msg=thor-2020081917444969&layout=thread

Issue #7 Break down: https://www.comicboards.com/php/show.php?msg=thor-2020091707283360&search=Thor+%237&layout=thread

And, oh look, me having the exact same discussion with Mod-Blake as we're having now, despite Mod-Blake being present throughout my entire substantive-critiquing history on these forums: https://www.comicboards.com/php/show.php?rpy=thor-2021041711375726&layout=thread

Yeah, amazing that something like this wouldn't have made an indelible impression on my memory since most of it amounts to your hard feelings of comics you don't like. Believe it or not there's a sea of this on the internet and this didn't stick out to me lol

Let's be clear about something. I have never said that you haven't written long posts about these comics. I said that I hadn't seen you present an argument or literary critique that wasn't overwhelming grounded in your own preferences. This is my consistent position: not that you don't go into detail, but that you conflate your taste with objective quality.

I think your standard for substantive critique isn't a good one if it just means, "I listed a bunch of things I didn't like."

Also, you said you posted essays. Let's say these would quality as essays. (Most of these posts are the size of a tweet thread.) Which one do you take to be the strongest one, most approaching objective or what have you? On that I'll demonstrate what I'm talking about. Or I can pick. I don't want you think I'm just going to pick the easiest one.

cheers,

Decompressed - check
Deconstructed - check
Illogical Plot Holes - check
180 degree characterization - check
Actual Heroism in short supply - check
Rubbish Fights - check

The only thing Cates has done well is Thor's power showing - which got the battleboards (are they even still a thing? ) fanboys on his side.

In all other respects he is Aaron-lite with none of that writers shock/mystery; snake-oil salesman expertise.

Your little spat with LGDB is amusing though; makes me think of two antifa supporters arguing; where one is trying to convince the other Portland is still a great place to live.

Or two anti-vaxxers arguing about which dose of Ivermectin cures COVID. Best to keep things Thor-related, eh?

I love that both the left and the right can come together to make cheap criticism and crap on other people's writing. Lol

I like to think of myself a real unifier, ya know lol

So is your point now that professional writing should not be criticized? Do you apply those same standards to every commercial product?

No my point (here) is that the standards for criticism should be at least half as high as the standard for the writing. I can't help but be bowled over by the irony of people who have ardent, stringent demands that art has to meet and if doesn't it's offensive detritus... while simultaneously wanting criticism to have virtually no standard.

Making art is hard. Criticism is cheap. It costs you nothing. That doesn't mean criticism has no place, but it's an important context.

If only there were a price of admission. Around $4-6 USD.

I would definitely pay money just to see if you were as half as good at writing as you are at pontificating on the quality of other people's. lol
