They're a team -- multiple heroes against a powerful solo foe is not an unusual thing. Er, a pile-on when the "villain" is fresh and taking him on singly fails is far different than beating on a relatively weakened foe. My opinion, of course. I could see it if Superman had been dealing with multiple Avengers and they weren't able defeat him any other way.
