Hey folks! I was just drifting off to sleep last night when it occured to me: I think I figured out the secret to Project 42. We all know that, on the surface, it's a giant prison in the Negative Zone filled with unregistered superhumans. But is that all it is?

Item #1 - The Negative Zone's primary villain, Annhilus, is currently invading the Earth's reality, wiping out galaxies.

Item #2 - Nova has made contact with Earth since the Civil War began, to warn them about Annihilus. (He's stated he knows about Civil War and is disgusted because the heroes are doing this rather than preparing for the coming Annihilation Wave.)

So, who did Nova contact to find out what was going on? Who would ANYONE contact, if they needed help repulsing an alien armada? Probably either the Avengers or the Fantastic Four. If it was the Avengers, he probably talked to Tony directly, since Tony was the only Avenger other than Peter living in the Tower proper. If it was the FF, he talked to Reed, who would have doubtlessly told Tony early on as the project advanced.

Ask yourselves this: What if Tony saw the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone? Project 42 is a giant, armored fortress in the heart of the Negative Zone itself, Annihilus's home territory. What if the real purpose of 42 is to move the noncompliant heroes from Earth in order to create a front line against a real, universe-shattering threat? Here's what I'm thinking: Tony's building of 42 was intended to provoke Annihilus into recalling some of his forces, and perhaps even himself, to the Negative Zone in order to destroy it. Inside are Earth's "rogue" champions, who will then attack Annihilus when he attacks. The heroes inside the "gulag" are intended to stop Annihilus. When Earth's population discovers what's happened, and how these heroes still saved the world despite their rejection under the law, there's no way registration will continue to stand, and these guys stay exiled into another dimension. Public opinion will demand their pardon and freedom. Meanwhile, Tony's arranged for the heroes on the outside that complied willingly to be intensively trained, all the better to prepare them for the upcoming war, if they are needed. In the end, everyone wins with this plan, and registration quietly fades away.

Any thoughts?

Three problems with the idea:

1) In Fantastic Four Foes, Reed already started the idea of building a prison in the Negative Zone; long before Civil War.

2) Nova actually didn't talk to anyone--he monitored the transmissions on earth. When Star Lord suggested that Annihlation would unite the earth; Nova didn't agree. He thought they'd shoot each other.

3) Civil War is so late, it was supposed to be over with before the Annihlation Wave/Nova reached earth.
