You're right about the crowd scene in the floating dome where the heroes first assembled, but the flashback in Illuminati book shows Xavier on the Battleworld in his wheelchair, and I'm pretty sure he was standing during those battles.

Maybe it's the same interdimensional anomaly that had the Hulk going into the Beyonder's "gate" wearing purple shorts, but coming out in purple pants...
