My SPIN on The Avengers The Initiative #3

Okay, while the SHRA is going on in the MU, there SHOULD be a title like this. There is LOTS going on with the Initiative all across the States that hasn't been seen for 3 months already (3rd issue). This book has equally LOTS of potential too. It's going to be hard to absorb some panels not knowing the whole picture. This was frustrating to substitue fascination with the mysteries for the full enjoyment of the moment (paid cover price for that). There was a lot on the plate (maybe too much) this time around to give us LOTS of food for thought...

-Shocker effect looks great on cover; nicely done pertinent action scene
-he's a consultant now; still waiting for official word on Astonishing continuity placement
-Cloud 9 has hutzpah to fly back; give her credit for professional feigning indifference to her apparently kill(s)
-Harball's narrow, uneducated opinion of telepath=telekinetic; kinda like it 'cuz once in awhile that thought briefly crosses my mind
-hoped there wouldn't be TOO much $%#* substituting; but there was
-Komodo looks hot; and that freaky light suggest NOT 100% Lizard-ish origins (image inducer?)
-Melati upset over being seen is interesting character development considering no one recognizes her (ala several Spiderman storylines) and everyone else on the team doesn't hide their faces; "nice to finally meet you"
-oh man, is Guantlet going to lug that guache arm around all the time; it's got to be more inconvenient and an eye sore than some MU monster-heroes experience
-assuming that only the victim can see Trauma's illusions; Dani probably reacted from experience when she sensed Hank was being affected by a unbelievable image that he saw himself as
-demon bear; Sienkowicz(sp?) flashback!
-a cliche tactic downplaying HYDRA to belittle their victory the President praised them for?; hardening recruits with strongarm mentality to that of the perceived mentality of the pre-SHRA outlaws?
-nice to see established/registered heroes did not go thru training and are potential instructors; explains why people like Heroes For Hire are running around unchecked (in fact sought by SHIELD for their last assignment)
-The Thing????!; very surprised by his participation given his CW position and current trying to mesh with the new FF politics
-Komodo is smaller than Thing's hand?; probably just artistic license there
-spot on conversation with Connors; but he is probably wrong about her perfecting it even though it was a nice touch to mention it DNA specific
-nice to see Bengal and Slapstick; there were 3 other unidentified trainees there to add to the Initiative count
-makes sense they want to promote trainees ASAP given the vaccuum of positions to fill; wonder how that'll affect the theme of the title with a core team
-SPINtech; already trying to think who the darts won't pierce and how the HULK will react to one in WWH (it WILL pierce him)
-nice to see the Initiative using cloaking that is sensitive to Spider-senses; makes sense how can be off panel in any title at anytime if a retcon arrest is needed
-SHIELD is different that Initiative; their CapeKillers are more openly present than Red Team - Tony's mind must be going a mile a minute with strategies
-½ Milion$$ !!??; and Komodo WASTES about a dozen of 'em - sheesh, Steve Austin would've been a more effective choice to send in
-"makes hard energy balls"; now it's clear aaaand his character actually is fleshed out a bit this time around
-everyone wants SPINtech (except maybe the TBolts team members ;\) ); does this guy demand respect or did he just do a Jedi mind nudge with the wave of his hand?
-"Prison 42"; love that waaay more than just "42"
-hated yellow and green web coloring; but Spidey's dialogue was all good
-Rhodey is cool; still wonder about his O*N*E* status though
-spidey/komodo fight handled well; "you blinked" \:\)
-Boomer's Australian euphamisms was one way to get by the sensors; even though Bench showed the less clever way a few pages earlier
-Red Team!; makes all that Amazing Spider-man storyline worthwhile
-one in a million shot and Valentine's day comment; Spidey rocks
-good enough ending though I'd like to know where in Spidey continuity; and is Komodo speaking literally or figuartively (guess we'll find out next)??!

LOTS of typingfood for thought, eh?

re: Trauma- I think it’s not actually illusion—he really “is” morphing into the fear-item of his victims—and in the case of Hank, it doesn’t quite make sense, since his human form would likely be his greatest desire—unless, Trauma can access people’s greatest desires, too—which still doesn’t explain why his ‘human Beast’ looks like a zombie-version. Perhaps another as-yet-unexplained aspect to his power.

I’m glad to see Danielle Moonstar back, but damn, this is the second time a Native American woman gets called “Pocahantas” in recent months (see Omega Flight #2 for USAgent’s crack toward Talisman). I was half-expecting Dani to clobber Trauma on principle (would’ve been nice).

Hardball is an egotistic jerk. Barely a few months after the Stamford disaster he walks into a bar expecting a room full of groupies instead of drunken rowdies. Dolt!

Komodo is a disaster waiting to happen. Her violent reaction to someone seeing her human form is surely a sign of it. Her almost maniacal pursuit of Spider-Man is the other sign. And while I’m pleased that War Machine is back as an armored hero, I detest that he has clearly swigged his man Stark’s kool-aid to the fullest. I thought he might be a voice of moderation.

And further, Stark’s Jack@$$ery is further confirmed now that there is an entire squad of the “Iron Spideys”.

Side note--Getting taught CPR & first aid is one thing, but “Why” are the trainees being taught the use of lethal weapons? You cannot deny that this is a quasi-Ultimates “militarized” initiative now.
