Okay, so X-men has Claremont & Byrne, Thor has Walt Simonson, Hulk has Peter David...is there a consensus as to the definitive writer or writer/artist team for the Avengers?? If not, who would you nominate?

We have three distinct eras:

1. Thomas/Bucsema set the standard.
2. Englehart/Shooter/Perez enhanced and stretched the characters. Englehart/Shooter go together because their storylines run together and overlap rather smoothly.
3. Busiek/Perez combined the standards set by the those mentioned above and delivered an awesome run of 30+ issues.

As a result, we have four writers Thomas, Englehart, Shooter and Busiek, with two artists, Bucsema and Perez who fit the bill, but that doesn't answer the question, does it?

I love the Thomas/Bucsema run; sadly, Bucsema's second run in the 80's was visually stunning, but the stories weren't as strong while all of Perez' runs were strong.

Busiek/Perez was also very strong, but a few of the stories/added characters didn't work. I liked them, but not as well as I could or should have.

My pick for definitive Avengers is Englehart/Shooter/Perez. All of their storylines are huge in the history and continuity of the Avengers: Vision and Scarlet Witch, The Celestial Madonna, Kang in the Old West, the memberships of the Swordsman, Mantis, Two-Gun Kid, Beast, Moondragon, Hellcat, Ms. Marvel and Jocasta cannot be understated. We were given stories with The Serpent Crown, The Squadron Supreme, Attuma, Sub-Mariner, Whizzer, Graviton, Lethal Legion, and Nefaria. We also had Wonder-Man's resurrection and conflict with the Vision and the Grim Reaper, Ultron's story, Scarlet Witch's growth as a powerful Avenger, as well as the connection between those characters with the Pyms linking the past to the present. And we top it all off with the Guardians of the Galaxy and the Korvac Saga. I have to say this is the definitive run of the Avengers!
