I think Thomas and Buscema are the standard.

Shooter and Perez are next.

I think Busiek and Perez had a decent run, but while the art was amazing, the stories where just retreads of the Shooter/Micheline run.

It seems reasonable for a writer to use classic villains in reestablishing a classic sensibility...but I too that most of Busiek's plots seemed like retellings of past stories he enjoyed as a fan. Usually there was just one or two many lifted elements to make it not seem like a new tale.

Part of the reason that those issues seem like retreads is that the classic elements were typically the most interesting thing going on. His "fan heart" kind of took over most of the time. But in his defense...comparisons between other classic tales were unavoidable since the book had mostly abandoned resembling anything close to being classic for years prior.

I will give Busiek credit in leaving the toys he was given in better shape than when he got them though (Hank as YJ aside)
