Your second idea is pretty much the same thing I was thinking would be cool.

The problem is that books with massive casts aren't really that successful. You would have to focus of a core group for the readers to become interesting. This is going to be a hard thing to do because you have to have the right combination of characters, which would in theory be a mix of students and teachers, but also pulling members from different casts. A cast such as Justice, Firestar, Wiccan, Patriot, Nico, Lucy in the Sky, Gravity, and Mettle may work for some readers but not others.

True. I'm not sure who would be the best to use as the core group with all those teams in the mix.

Readers buying the title for Runaways would be annoyed not to get enough Molly. And Young Avengers might just want to read about them only and wouldn't necessarily care about the Loners. (who I liked a lot)

The Avengers Initiative title somehow worked pretty well with a huge cast. There were the original cadets and students. The teachers. Then more cadets and Taskmaster. Plus the Shadow Initiative. Counter Force. Constrictor and Diamondback...

I think the reason it worked was that we as readers had no expectations, nobody that we would be upset about being excluded. So long as the storytelling was good, which it was, we were happy.

This idea is what they used for the New Mutants/Academy X/New X-Men title a few years ago, where students were divided into groups and mentored by select X-Men characters. While the book focused on one group (called the New Mutants), we see other groups in the background.

That was a fun setup for the young X-Men, exactly what I was thinking about when I posted.
