Overall I enjoyed the movie, but there are three main problems as I see it:

    Quote:
    1. Hawkeye was a piece of wood, no development of the character at all. The other characters got at least one scene that show their depth. Hawkeye got zip and for that, I didn't care or feel anything for the character.

Hawkeye was a lot like the female love interest is in a lot of movies: he was just there to be put in the refrigerator to motivate an actual main-character. I doubt many would have even noticed how thin his characterization was if he had been female. I didn't really mind because I liked Black Widow. That he was just a plot-device in her story didn't detract from that imo.

    2. This movie picks up soon after Cap's defrosting and there's not one bit of 'man out of time' syndrome. I think Joss Whedon dropped the ball with Cap because after being revived, the out-of-time aspect of his character is what makes him interesting at this point. There was no indication of any inner struggle except for a seconds long montage in the beginning. For a great story about Cap's personal struggle with lost time, I suggest reading Mark Waid's Captain America: Man Out Of Time.

In a way they did, by making him overly trusting of Fury, his superior officer. Cap comes from a simpler time when soldiers trusted their superiors more unquestioningly. Indeed, his journey from an overly trusting Good Soldier type into someone who looked at the world with eyes open enough to become a leader himself was what his story-arc was about. I found that a much cleverer way to go than simply having him angst about missing a bunch of history.
