Was Avatar re-released? Both of those movies also had very unusual runs. Titanic did not have a strong opening but was in theaters forever. It did a good job at holding on and bringing in a consistant amount but it was in theaters for over a year. The re-release on the big anniversary of the Titanic helped secure its position on the list with 3D money. I think if Avengers can pass the initial number it is pretty special. Avengers may be re-released one day as well.

For the record Avatar was re-released as Avatar: Special Edition. Though I looked it up on Boxofficemojo and it turns out that re-release didn't generate that much revenue (only $10 million). So I guess it didn't have the impact I initially thought it did.

As for Avengers I suppose you're right but they'd have to have a compelling reason to re-release it and I can't think of one. Titanic's re-release was 3D enhanced and Avatar: Special Edition included well publicized cut footage that was inserted back into the movie.

Maybe 15 years from now they'll have virtual reality technology and Avengers can pull a Titanic then. But for the foreseeable future I don't think a re-release is in the cards.
