It was sentient in a way. I would say it's akin to the Venom symbiote but more "alive". It would "whisper" to its current owner and make them do things.

To me, Venom is a living being - as seen in that origin mini. As for DND, IIRC there are a lot of magic items in a handbook and certain ones are specified to have an intelligence with them - take that to be like a mystical program that activated on contact and not an entity. Maybe it was relatable to an engram thing directing powers like Vision had. This seems more closely related to how Unstable Molecule put it below:

> I wouldn't say sentience - but it was frequently referred to as having what I would call instinct. Phrases like "it wants to be found" and "the ring betryaed him" make it seem like the ring had an instinct to return to Sauron's hand however possible. But I don't think it's correct to say the ring could think, or had a personality.

Like the Gem of Cyttorak does not have Cyttorak trapped inside it but can channel his life-force (apparently only if so allows it). True, lots of items, and artifacts in particular, in DND and the MU have a life force merged to them but throwing TWO at us this issue felt too plot device convenient. The Hag and the Tiger both appeared living in their respective items. May be wrong - we will see with further exposition.

Come to think of it their may be precident for the Tiger as Khan assembled ALL the Tiger gems to apparently free the entity in the 616 world - or maybe it was just a mystic preprogrammed simulcrum. Will have to dig out my old PM&IF issues unless omeone recalls w/o checking.
