I think that looks like fun! The problem with the Illuminati is that they make our heroes seem less heroic. And the problem with the Fury team was twofold: usage of the name "Avengers" when they have no connection to the actual Avengers, plus some of the members don't sit well with me. Sabertooth? Kraven? No thanks!

Actually, here's a third thing that maybe bothered only me. I didn't like that '50s team being stuck into continuity because it seems like they are stealing the thunder of the far superior Agents of Atlas.

Well, it was already established that the Agents of Atlas were disbanded by Eisenhower before Fury's Avengers. The team only lasted 6 months before it was shut down (in late-1958/early-1959). So, there was no thunder to steal. This is probably the reason Bendis chose the Avengers team to be in 1959 (shortly after the shutdown of AoA).

Oh I know that was already established. Busiek nixed the AoA for a reason, I assume because he didn't want a team to have existed called the Avengers prior to the standard version. Just to keep things neat.

And then Bendis undid that by sticking us with a different 50s team, meaning they might as well have just let it be the Agents of Atlas if we were going to have a precursor group anyway.

I'm a big fan of Jeff Parker's AoA, particularly vol 1. The only thing I didn't like was him retconning Venus into having been a siren. I'm not sure *what* he really could do considering the subject matter of those old Venus comics though.
