    Well thats clearly not true.

    Quote:
In no society in the history of man are the achievements of people who do good deeds primarily out of ego, arrogance, for personal acclaim or for payment for example considered the equal of those who do them simply out of a sense of benevolance.

None of that has anything to do with greatness. And in fact, the Greek society loved this sort of thing.

Gilgamesh is another one. He's the one who achieved his greatness, but he was anything but the hero of his story. He was a rat bastard.

    Quote:
Hercules is clearly a *very* faulted hero - and it is these faults that make most of our heroes so compelling - and whether you consult the legends or the comic books that is something that has been shown to be the case on many occasions.

Yes, very faulted. Very HUGELY great though. Stop attaching some sort of morality to the word "great." It does not mean what you think it does.

Of course it has meaning. In comic terms do we honestly consider an act of 'greatness' that might be committed by Hercules out of sheer thrill of the challenge to be the equal of an act of greatness committed by someone like Captain America out of a feeling of alturism?

There have to be distinctions and degrees.
