Quote: what is the diference
Jail is usually a local detention center by a county or city. Being held there is usually for a short amount of time. You just get arrested or going to be released soon. In some States if you get arrested, convicted and your sentence is just a few days to a few months they will just let you stay in Jail.
Prison is a state or federal center where you go once you have been sentenced. You go hear you are hear for at Least 1 year +1 day. You are doing a nice amount of time if you are sent there. That is why crime dramas are based in prisons.
So if jails count I am sure especially after Civil War a few of them have been to jail.
