Squadron Supreme 008 (2016)

The cover is brilliant. Although, like Medusa's hair power, as far as symbolism goes - it's a stretch. On the plus side, it is just as good compared to the last cover AND the story inside is SO MUCH better than the unfulfilling set up in #7.

The story seems to thankfully clean up the messy Myriad movement easily enough. The mass of aliens (that have unconvincingly been under the radar of so many Earth agencies) are in disarray and on the run. Medusa has taken into custody the aliens sloppily defeated by BB, Doc, and Toro (so they're "off the streets" for now and Earth agencies can deal with 'em at a calm pace). The NuHuman coccoons were all taken (which delays more annoying flood or rando Inhumans born - as does Inhuman tradition of not wanting to know the powers that will to emerge). BB destroys all trace of this foothold base with a fine showing and a purpose (- something the SS should be doing given it's supposed to be their book and M.O. ;\) ).

The story seems to shockingly kill Kyle Richmond. This is after some good fight sequencing and strategy.

The story then gets a bit muddled. Doc Spectrum thinks it's okay to ditch the masked identity thing just 'cuz some Inhumans have seen her? That doesn't seem right. Black Bolt answers Doc's questions why, during Incursion, he killed her world but spared her - finally. But: why is he shown hobnobbing with the Royals still when he should be estranged. Why is Doc's unending thirst for revenge seemingly so easily sated? Why why why is Marvel tweaking her power as an aspect of her reality's version of Terrigenisis? Ugh, talk about confounding!

The story brings together the rest of the Squadron. Unfortunately we they don't say or do anything. Particularly sad that Thundra figuratively is standing on the same page by her silence. Add the annoyance of not chronology footnote with Hype's title to allow readers to relate to how he is seemingly changing.

Nice twist: It was a skrull not Kyle. Fooled me.

Nice twist: The Myriad overwhelming presence and summary defeat is not so throwaway, afterll, as Warrior Woman steps in to seize control in a (sloppily presented) trial by combat. Sure, it's odd that an "Earth" woman is even allowed the chance and the Mordred (not forgotten) subplot is tied into this, but still it's kinda interesting. And that Kymellian cameo in the background has me somewhat curious as to his loyalty.

One of best TV commercial going right now...

I miss my dad and my brother.

I can't fathom this book out anymore. After a reasonable start the rough direction and purpose of the series has gradually drifted away into multiple muddled plotlines with various characters wandering in and out of them seemingly at random and for no real reason.
The targeting of Namor, now the appearance of Black Bolt - these things suggest the Squadron might be out to hunt The Illuminati of whom these two were members, but then the reasons for so decisively dealing with Namor seem not to apply to the rest of the group he was involved with. So one rule for the Prince of Atlantis and one for everyone else involved in the incursions which ended the Squadron members respective earths it seems.

With such a lack of clear purpose and direction I do not see this book lasting much longer. Which is a great shame as frankly with his Fantastic Four and All-New Invaders work James Robinson showed he was a much better writer and plotter than this current effort.
