Dick became Nightwing because he grew into his own hero. Since the most creative sort of angst Bat-writers can come up with regarding 'Wingster is his issues with Batdaddy, I'd be willing to bet Batman still took some action that equaled him firing Dick as Robin, and him becoming Nightwing is Dick passive aggressive revenge.

Indeed, those were the days, Dick choosing to pass on the name of Robin to Jason, not finding out more or less by accident.

Indeed he did. Dick was late for a mission in Gotham, and despite pointing out that he had been busy with the Titans rescuing dozens of endangered kids, it wasn't good enough for Bat-Daddy, who told him to either stay as his sidekick, or get the heck out of Gotham... oh and leave the costume and identity behind.

Ironically, Alfred had just prepared a new Robin costume for Dick looking like the adult Earth-2 version we might have hoped he'd take had he stayed as Robin much past the age of 19...
