When it was originally addressed in the 1960's, it was mentioned that Bruce was looked after by his Uncle Philip, and his housekeeper Mrs Chilton, a kindly woman who made sure he never found out her terrible secret, that it was her son, Joe Chill, who had actually shot Thomas and Martha Wayne. (In this time period, Alfred did not even arrive in Bruce Wayne's service until some time after Robin debuted, and the reason he came was that it was a deathbed wish of his father, who had been Thomas Wayne's butler at one point.)

Bruce went to school as usual, but also spent time on preparing his other skills. He can't have been much older than 15 or so when he first wore the Robin costume to learn from one of the world's foremost police detecitves; Harvey Harris. Bruce went to college to study law, but found that he was more interested in "justice" than the legal system.

This is detailed in "The Untold Legend of the Batman"

Events around the time of Year One (post Crisis) established that he was not adopted or fostered, but driven at an incredibly young age, used the enormous resources of the Wayne fortune and legal firms to legally block any attempt to have him taken into care. Alfred was now shown as having been the Wayne family retainer for many years, and de facto parent for Bruce in their absence.

I can't recall if it mentioned him going to school normally, but I think he might not have done and been a completely driven self-taught and friendless (one of the things he wanted to make sure that Dick and Jason never had to experience even if they were costumed crimefighters)

Wanting to cover his true intellect, he made sure he got into college thanks to his wealth and alienated anyone who might befriend him by being utterly obnoxious. He found it frustrating that he couldn't ask any of the questions he wanted to know answers to because it would draw attention to the idea he might be smart, so had to learn disguise techniques and sneak records into approraite files to become assorted "visiting students" who could ask all the questions he wanted.

Now, Post Infinite Crisis, I'm not sure what his past is...
