The cowl isn't supposed to match the armor. I'm just making it look more like the comic book black-and-gray Batman, while retaining the realism.
Actually, the reason Batman wears (or used to wear) the yellow symbol is the same reason why Frank Castle wears a huge white skull. Because it draws gunfire, and his chest is covered in kevlar. Take another look at Dark Knight Returns. He mentions it.
Also, the picture that I think you're talking about is WAY too well lit. That much light and a totally white background just kills the picture.
